I have my own dedicated Raq with my own nameservers (ns.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com)

Well, mydomain.com is about to close down and I want to open a new business up.

So now, for this new business, I want to change the ns servers so they are ns.newbusiness.com and ns2.newbusiness.com

I would like to know what are the steps I should take to do this? I have a Raq 3 if that helps

I have about 20 websites that are currently pointing to the ns.mydomain.com nameservers so would this change affect any of them? And what would I need to do to make sure everything changes smoothly?

First thing you will need to do is determine if you run the DNS on your RaQ or if a host provides it, I will assume you run the DNS on your RaQ.

1. In site management you should already have one site perhaps two (if you run both primary and secondary on one RaQ) for ns.mydomain.com and maybe ns2.mydomain.com. Just edit these so they are ns.newbusiness.com and ns2.newbusiness.com.

2. In the RaQ's control panel enter the DNS parameters. Click the pencil icon to edit the Address record(s) and change the domain for the both of them and.

3. You will need to contact the registrar for each of the domains you have to change the nameservers.

This way will do the job, and may be a little easier however you will be looking at some downtime where the sites will not resolve properly. To avoid this I would do the following:

1. Add a virtual site on each RaQ (or two on one RaQ if you run both pri. and sec. dns on the same RaQ), one with the host name ns and one with the host name ns2 with the same domain (newbusiness.com) for the both and enter in the IP address from ns.olddomain.com and ns2.olddomain.com to ns.newdomain.com and ns2.newdomain.com respectively.

2. Create new Address records under the DNS parameters in the control panel. Enter ns/ns2 for the hosts and again use the same IP's from the ns.olddomain.com and ns2.olddomain.com.

3. Transfer all of the 20-some domains to the new nameserver information and you should have a seamless transfer because both of the name servers should be running I *think*. If it works just wait several days and you should be able to delete the old dns records.
