View Full Version : Most reliable and renowned
Hikari 05-08-2008, 06:40 PM I saw that the registrars that host the largest number of domains are godaddy and enon, but at the same time godaddy is very criticized.
So, which registrar is renowned to be reliable and don't have much problems?
None of them. The fact is there are many consumers who are dumb or expect too much for their $7 registration fee. The cause of most complaints. GoDaddy and eNom get a lot of complaints because they are the biggest 2 registrars. Every registrar gets these complaints.
Hikari 05-09-2008, 09:44 PM I saw complains saying that godaddy deletes domains without much effort to help its customers. I never heard of complains about enon.
Well it seems there is not a list of recommended registrars at all :)
RossH 05-12-2008, 10:07 AM There are many lists of recommended registrars, all you need to do is some searching on the forum. My personal recommendations include www.namecheap.com and www.moniker.com
Right Hosting 05-12-2008, 11:31 AM There will aways be people having problems. I would try out each register you are interested in with one domain and see how you like the control panel, support, prices etc. If you like them then you have an account setup and you can add more domains.
nameslave 05-12-2008, 11:38 AM From my 10 yrs+ first hand experience with dozens of registrars, Tucows is the most reliable. They are also a publicly traded company, for those who are not aware of it.
I don't have any domains at tucows, but isn't it so that they only create reseller accounts and not end user accounts?
If not what is the sign up page for us normal people?
Edit: and also which tucows reseller is best?

Yes, they are a wholesale registrar; however, they do have a 100% owned reseller at domaindirect.com.
OK, thank you for the info.
Hikari 05-12-2008, 08:35 PM Thanks for the tips guys. Unfortunately I'm having problems with name.com's private whois and found out that domaincentral.com also has free private whois.
I'll stay with enom and name.com for now, and transfer a domain to domaincentral to take a look.
BuffaloBill 05-12-2008, 08:51 PM Network Solutions is sort of the defacto standard. You can not get fired for choosing Network Solutions (even if they have the same service as GoDadddy for a little more).
All registrars will have problems. The more users you have, the more users that will find a problem with "something".
Aorozco 05-12-2008, 09:38 PM In the next months i go to transfer many of my coms and orgs to domaincentral, and nets to dynadot because the bulk price is gorgeous and have some decent promos.

For some reason I didn't see your post before!
Indeed, I see lots of registrars with "$7 fee", and some charging $15. So, I ask, why pay $15 if there are others with half the price? What is their difference?
I took a look at tucows's https://www.domaindirect.com/parking.html and everything they offer name.com offers too, for that half the price, and with a better control panel.
So, their difference is that tucows is more reliable than name.com, have a better support (they must have, for that price), and don't have Google's support?
Should I set up my most valuable domains on tucows and keep secondary ones on name.com? :P
Aorozco 05-25-2008, 04:35 PM By the way many Comments Of Tucows are for guys seeking How manage domains becauyse their reseller go out of business. I have some ideas here.
By the way, y think Dynadot.com is better than godaddy, and have better prices and service, and forums too ( not much active but useful )
Tristan Perry 05-25-2008, 04:57 PM Moniker is the best.
They're fairly non-main stream, although their security is next to none.
They have never lost a single domain, and I've never heard of any "horror" stories with them (whilst I have with GoDaddy, eNom et al).
Hikari 05-25-2008, 07:27 PM Moniker seem to be good. Unfortunately they don't have private whois and I think they don't have free nameservers also.
DomainCentral has private whois but no nameserver.
DomainDirect has nameserver and private whois, but is more expensive than DomainCentral with paid nameserver :-x
I still don't see why is it worthy to pay $15 for a domain unless you have DNSMadeEasy-quality nameservers and working private whois with spam filter.
Tristan Perry 05-25-2008, 07:46 PM Hikari, Moniker offer private WHOIS :) And what exactly do you by "free nameservers"? Their nameserver features seem comprehensive to me.
Moniker's CP isn't too great, although they are relatively feature packed IMHO :)
Well, I actually think that DirectI resellers have less troubles no a days, so I recommend http://www.xeodomains.com / http://www.xeodomains.co.uk along with http://www.namecheap.com

I've been happily using Tucows for years for my own domains, other clients and as a reseller for the last year and a half.
I haven't contected their support for a while but even throught I do like them back when I needed help they were pretty slow to reply. Apparently they changed their system and said they are working on improving support.

They have private whois, but it costs $4. Why pay that much if other registrars offer if for free? It is almost costless, it just require to change the domain whois database and an email redirection system.
Free nameserver is free nameserver, the registrar offers nameservers for you point your domains and subdomains' IPs, CNAME and MX to wherever you want. Without free nameserver you need to pay for them or use a free service elsewhere.
Nice CP UI is a must, but if you can do what you need even with a poor UI, well, better than not being able :P
I liked http://www.xeodomains.com/ because they show prices on the home page and they are average. But with that they don't offer free nameservers (requires to pay $1 more) and I didn't see anything about private whois :P
Tnx for the suggestions guys. However I still don't see why to pay more than $10 for domain + DNS + private whois :)
