These are just a few of the ideas we had for naming our servers. If you think of a more original naming scheme, please post details. :)

If you think of a more original naming scheme, please post details. :) Thanks MultiVol 08-22-2002, 10:27 PM server1 server2 is more easy to remember, rather that then other names.. and it sounds good too.. Jim_UK 08-22-2002, 10:31 PM Cities, Colours, Countries, Planets and Animals I've seen before at various hosting companies. US States is a bit country-specific for me and numbers don't really do it for me either.... so Other. Not quite sure what though :) How about musicians: hendrix, dylan, morrison, etc? Trouble is with a lot of musicians is that they tend to die at an early age in the prime of their career.... not a good omen for a server  :) MCHost-Marc 08-22-2002, 10:34 PM Be original ...ex girlfriends/boyfriends/wifes/husbands. just kidding. :D Deb 08-22-2002, 10:44 PM How about a "Made Up Name" list ;) Female made up names http://www.kabalarians.com/female/madeup-f.htm Male made up names http://www.kabalarians.com/male/madeup-m.htm There's also quite a few cool mineral names http://mineral.galleries.com/minerals/byname.htm Santa Clause has quite a few interesting names around the world http://www.lnstar.com/mall/main-areas/santafaq.htm Castles have many different types of names http://www.kctv.ne.jp/~ketc/students/pages/kimikotomoko/names.html Rather than states...why not state flowers? http://www.anewleaf.com/florist/stateflowers.htm Here's a list of cyclone names http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml In other words...try to find something unique and special for yourself... Themes are usually nice especially if they are unique. For our own servers we didn't go with a set theme though I often wish we would have. We sort of name each one as they are 'born' sort of like naming a child lol... I do think it's best to name a server something you can 'call it' easily in a conversation. It's shocking how often you'll find yourself talking about (or even to) the server as if it were a human :stickout GlideTech 08-22-2002, 10:48 PM Thanks for the great ideas Deb. You have been a big insipiration to me and my wife while building our business. Its great to have "real" people like yourself on the forums. Makes the day a little easier. :) Thanks to everyone else too. Keep the ideas coming! JTY 08-22-2002, 10:54 PM Fruits... or foods... I once did those, certainly fun. Darth 08-22-2002, 10:55 PM Call it GlideTech :D GlideTech 08-22-2002, 11:13 PM Originally posted by Darth Call it GlideTech :D Thats ok right now since we only have one server, but when we start getting more we will want to have a fancy naming scheme. ;) okihost 08-22-2002, 11:28 PM We did saints.. jude.okihost.com mary.okihost.com john.okihost.com All depends on what you like.. My wife though this idea up I have seen everything though from cars to kids names.. cperciva 08-22-2002, 11:30 PM How about naming your servers after the people who wrote the software you're using? torvalds.glidetech.com behlendorf.glidetech.com cox.glidetech.com miller.glidetech.com raymond.glidetech.com stallman.glidetech.com et cetera. Haze 08-22-2002, 11:30 PM We name ours after bands we ( well I ) like :) Synthetic 08-22-2002, 11:32 PM Body parts! :D JTY 08-22-2002, 11:45 PM Now that's an idea... I should start naming the machines around here like that... :) akashik 08-23-2002, 12:28 AM how about The Wombles: http://www.wombles.tv/ I personally wish we'd done it. :) orinoco.server.com tomsk.server.com shansi.server.com etc etc Synthetic 08-23-2002, 12:39 AM Another idea: Name your servers after sounds... :D Like "ding dong, zZzZzZzzzz...., etc..." Jedito 08-23-2002, 01:27 AM how about cartoons characters? You have a long list there. Deb 08-23-2002, 02:49 AM Thanks for the great ideas Deb. You have been a big insipiration to me and my wife while building our business. Its great to have "real" people like yourself on the forums. Makes the day a little easier. Wow, happy to know I've done something to help ;) Trust me... the inspirations go both ways which is probably why I hang out here ;) Having a husband/wife team has been a blast for us though I think it takes a unique couple to pull it off. My husband and I spend 99.9% of our time only 4ft from each other 7 days a week ... It ummm takes some getting used to LOL Are there children over there as well or just the two of you for now? This probably belongs in a different thread but I wonder how many other hosts around here started off with the "whole family" dedicated to the hosting business vs. just a single member of the family working it while the others do 'their own thing'... One other note on server names -- We also try to ensure our server names are easy to spell and type. We've tried to hold to an 8 character limit. She is not as into it as I am, but still a big help either way. We are still very small (less than 20 customers) so its not alot of work right now, but in the future I know it will take a joint effort to keep things going smoothly. Right now I just have to talk her into answering support tickets :stickout One step at a time ;) Are there children over there as well or just the two of you for now? Right now it is just the 2 of us, but there is one on the way in October. I am already teaching her the basics and she hasn't even seen daylight yet. :D One other note on server names -- We also try to ensure our server names are easy to spell and type. We've tried to hold to an 8 character limit. Good point. Thanks again for the tips. :agree: Acroplex 08-23-2002, 03:09 AM US presidents. Oh wait, there will be 2 Bush'es :D mind21_98 08-23-2002, 04:24 AM Why not astrology? Of course, you'd probably only have 24 names to choose from (Western and Chinese zodiology), but after that you could switch to planets. :D Studio64 08-23-2002, 04:29 AM Originally posted by Kiwi Be original ...ex girlfriends/boyfriends/wifes/husbands. just kidding. :D Seriously... At a job I used to intern at we nick-named the servers after ex's.... It was all fun and games until our boss over heard us one day... Actual Conversation AnonymousTech: "I was so pissed off... Cindy went down on me during my lunch break" Boss: "What the HELL!" After a 3 minutes of explaining he found it very damn funny but, he nix'd the idea so we had to go back to the original name scheme. Family pet names... Now here was my little muse. Which sounds worse. 1) "Cindy went down on me" 2) "Butch went down on me" (Butch was the name of a secretary's pitt bull) I prefer Cindy but, our boss had the final call... I just could never have to nerve to say Butch like that... :D jeellison 08-23-2002, 04:37 AM How about elements from the periodic table? NetXL 08-23-2002, 06:22 AM I name my home computers after failed dot-coms. Even RackShack could name all of their servers after 'em. ;) Lats 08-23-2002, 06:45 AM Rocky Horror Picture Show characters ;) Lats... combs 08-23-2002, 06:51 AM I voted for animals. meeeeewwwww. Acronym BOY 08-23-2002, 11:37 AM Calling them by any geographical location is not a good thing. What if you expand and now have servers in 6 cities? Lot's of people use the periodic table, fruit + veg names, beverages are popular too e.g. vodka, martini. We did consider body parts but thought some people could get offended when we'd run out of arms, legs etc. and moved on to ones like nipple, penis etc. - so we gave it a miss, although we did have a few laughs along the way. rmartin 08-23-2002, 08:58 PM Our 2 servers were based on insults 1st was "Weapon" 2nd was "Cheese" next was going to be "tart" but we didnt get that far Thanks Ahmad 08-23-2002, 09:39 PM There was that list, but I don't know what it is called.
