If you have access to the administrative contact email, you can request a transfer and approve it yourself.

This is the "normal" procedure for transferring a domain:

Go the the registrar that you wish to transfer the name to and setup an account/whatever they require.
From the new registrar request the transfer
The admin contact should then receive emai(s) asking to confirm the transfer.
Do what the email says to approve the transfer.

I had to keep it pretty generic. The method of confirmation varies greatly from registrar to registrar. It's very important, however, that the admin contact can recieve the email.

actually the $8.88 they charge goes towards adding another year or registry to your domain name. I just transferred one of my domains to namecheap to test out their service and I noticed that the charge extended my expiry date another full year......so they aren't really charging a transfer fee, rather just a year renewal fee. :)

i was wondering .... will it be ok with onlinenic.... i mean i don't have access to account there ... so does this matter ?

Normally the domain registration will be extended by 1 year when you transfer. I belive there are some rules that if you transfer within the first 60 days of registration it won't extend.

Not having access at onlinenic might cause you a problem. Some registrars don't do anything to confirm the transfer. Others have an e-mail/web interface. Some require you to access the control panel for your domain to approve the transfer.

The safest thing to do is contact onlinenic and find out what you'll need to do to transfer a domain away from them.

You cannot transfer within the first 60 days of registration.

Where people get stuck is transfering within the first 45 days of a renewal. In this case, the renewal is most often forfeit, as the registrar will get an automatic refund from the registry, as if the domain was not renewed at all.

You will lose your initial renewal - of course the renewal that is mandatory as part of the transfer will happen.

thewitt,

Thanks for the clarification. I've seen it discussed before, but never the exact rules.

Strange. I have two domains transferred from ******** to enom within 45 days, and they both have expiration dates in 2004. (originally expires in 2002, renewed once in ********, and transferred to enom).

thank you all :)

i m real confused right now about the transfer ... what if they onlinenic doesn't free the domain ... does any1 has experiece with onlinenic ??

what would happen if i take risk and do the transfer and then come to know onlnenic is not letting me do this without accessing their control panel ?

i mailed namecheap people and told them the situation, in response they just sent name server addresses so wha do i do with them ?

You have only the transfer fee to lose - so request the transfer anyway and good luck. The alternative is to wait for your friend to return.
