View Full Version : FDCServers???
Im looking to get a new server, and I don't know much.
FDCServers are getting new servers next week:
XP 2000
512MB RAM
80GB IBM HDD 7200
They want $199 setup and $99/month. Is this a good deal?
And are FDCServers reliable? Fast?
Also, what else can you reccomend?
Thanks.
phpcoder 08-21-2002, 09:38 PM AMD XP 2000?
Unmetered bandwidth?
I looked at the site but couldn't find any information on this.
Hostkookster 08-21-2002, 09:42 PM I can't get on the site....
Stuck on the home page.
phpcoder 08-21-2002, 09:45 PM http://www.fdcservers.net
I bet that is why... dont ask :stickout
Hostkookster 08-21-2002, 09:59 PM Hey it worked :)
hmm, must be their old site. Their server offers are 6 days overdue. They end on August 15.
Cogent again, and 3 lines too? probably not multihomed then. All from same company.
They are getting these servers in next week.
Neo3Net 08-21-2002, 10:51 PM Depends what you plan to use the server for. If you search you will see over and over. FDC servers are just not reliable for hosting. However, some might disagree.
Try doing a search and looking through the archives.
Thanks

astraler2k 08-23-2002, 03:15 AM UP NOW!
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 03:33 AM astraler2k - give me your email adress so we can give you written notice every time we need to reboot our company server
netdude 08-23-2002, 03:35 AM bummer, your network was down and you know it. i noticed it too but deleted my post to be polite.
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 03:38 AM well I wouldn`t say that .... we had to reboot our server and subnet it`s on because it was being intentialy flooded but that didn`t affect entire network
netdude 08-23-2002, 03:41 AM client's servers were down, mine was. www.fdcservers.net was. all this data goes through a single server? maybe that explains why everything is slow lately?
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 03:45 AM I am not going to describe our topology here but
only people who get slow speed on our network are the ones who abuse being on 100mbit uncapped port and those people are caped
astraler2k 08-23-2002, 03:50 AM hey bummer6666,
my email address is:
makrino@yahoo.com
Ok, thanks
seg fault 08-23-2002, 04:27 AM Always a good sign when the companies website is down *chuckle*
My servers were never reliable or had decent pings - I dont even think there was even a time that there was no packetloss
Thats two boxes on two different network segments
Also been waiting for a refund forever and a day, but Petr never keeps his word, so I'm not holding my breath.
Everytime there is a network problem it is always to be blamed on someone else. I dont like hosts who cannot own up to their own poor managements and/or networking.
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 04:34 AM this comes from a pissed off ex-client who got booted for stealing IPs and blackmailing us. Have fun bashing
astraler2k 08-23-2002, 04:50 AM bummer6666, send me all news and announce for about servers.
netdude 08-23-2002, 05:22 AM huh? i never said that was bad actually (using a server to balance out load between multiple 100Mbps feeds, assuming the server can handle the traffic, quite wise actually because than can actively monitor and distribute traffic more accurately). the slowness is something everybody claims on these forums, something to be expected of fdc and cogent, not just me. as for the uptime record, well, i am sure there are atleast a dozen, if not a hundred or two, people that can back that up as being very poor to the point of not being even 99% (which is actually quite bad).
and also, you actively cap clients? didn't know that, maybe you should mention that in your policies because everywhere you seem to use the term unmetered 100Mbps connection, which would mean the user actually has access to 100Mbps. but if its capped, its not access to 100Mbps, is it?
additionally, what most people don't understand that even the most advanced routers are just dinky little computers that are just a bit more specialized (very stripped down processor and software set). so a powerful computer should be able to a decent job in their place.
[EDIT]
actually, i see on your web site itself you clearly note 'un- capped 100mbit port'. so whats this capping about?
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 05:26 AM I was reffering to hosticle
netdude 08-23-2002, 05:30 AM sorry.
but i will say. bummer6666, as a business man is the quite honest. always done exactly what hes said he'll do and always on time, his support is quite excellent in my opinion. if it hadn't been for cogent (not nessecarily his network actually), i would host with him 'till the end. but i can understand his need for cogent, because of his quite affordable pricing.
i mean, i submit a request, if i don't get the job done in a matter of minutes, its probably because i've forgotten something stupid along the way (like giving him a password to login or something).

yes everybody gets connected on 100mbit uncapped port but clients who abuse this by sending attacks, leeching all the bandwidth etc will get capped
Hostkookster 08-23-2002, 05:31 AM and also, you actively cap clients? didn't know that, maybe you should mention that in your policies because everywhere you seem to use the term unmetered 100Mbps connection, which would mean the user actually has access to 100Mbps. but if its capped, its not access to 100Mbps, is it?
Yes Netdude, you beat me to it. I was gonna ask the same question.
netdude 08-23-2002, 05:33 AM but then the port is not uncapped anymore. making the statement on the site incorrect. and hence, false advertising.
but don't get me wrong, i totally understand what you do and why you do it, otherwise you'll have morons abusing the network to death and it won't be good for anybody. but still. what point do you consider 'excessive'?

bummer6666 08-23-2002, 05:37 AM you can call it false advertising ...but I guarrantee you other company would just drop you for that , no refund because you would be disrupting the networkwhich is against the policy.
I never said the cap is pernament but untill the server gets fixed the cap would remain
Hostkookster 08-23-2002, 05:39 AM Yes very understandable. :)
Totally agree:D
bummer6666 08-23-2002, 05:40 AM also since this discussion started one of our routers is getting hammered big time ...I guess somebody is having fun
StevenG 08-23-2002, 07:58 AM 100mbit port
So thats where all the porn is hosted LOL....... :D

Why would I steal IP's when I was assigned 128 of them?
How did I blackmail you?
I told you to refund me and I wouldn't have a problem with you - but you haven't so there is still a problem! Hardly blackmail
Ignore all my emails - say you will put me on better ports, blame my network cards, blame other clients, drop my server and say i'm stealing IP's AFTER I ask for a refund, call me a blackmailer because I ask for a refund.
Don't trust them guys - thieving, lieing and buck passing is how they play the game.
Hostkookster 08-23-2002, 11:02 PM :eek2:
*Whistle* quiet down there, no need for mud slinging.:argue:
Hostkookster 08-23-2002, 11:06 PM I mean both of you.
