Hey all,

I'm currently in the market for a control panel that allows me to branch my services to different servers.

I hate having a single point of failure when it comes to all of my services, and honestly... from what it looks like out there... most control panels run on a single server that expect your mysql server, email server, and web server to be on the same box as it. I have seen some panels that allow you to have your mysql on another box... but what about email?

The other thing that I'm really disliking is that "get a fresh install of your OS.. and we will install the rest with an RPM file". Why on earth would i put pre compiled software on my box, with compiled options that i did not choose, and that in the long run... I would be expected to support?

So I'm looking for a control panel that will allow to me have my email on one server, my database on another, and my web site on another. A central point of administration, and when a user signs up for there account, have that central server make the accounts on the other servers and LINUX only.

I have found one... which is hosting controller but the kicker is... they require ONE Microsoft server. At that point... you can run all the Linux servers you want. But for a guy who's hosting products are already linux... I do not feel like bringing in a Microsoft product just to control my servers.

any suggestions?

The majority of the time any software that comes with an Operating System is required. You of course have the option before requesting an operating system, to request a minimal install of the operating system of your choice.

I can't think at the moment of any type of Linux control panels that separate the mysql, web, and email server but i'm sure contacting some of the major providers, you will be able to find a solution.

Thanks for getting back to me...

When i said about the software... i was talking about some of the control panels. They want you to install there own version of mysql, spamassassin, and apache. Infact... they require that you get the mini install of your OS before you download your installer file.

which is kinda sad b/c honestly... how hard is it to run software that's already on the box. Webmin does it very well... all you have to do it tell it where the files are and your done. But yet the big guys are all about "If you want to use our panel.. here is everything you need".

Just think of all the features you are missing out on if you compile it yourself.

No webmin doesn't do it very well. From the latest version i checked you have
to define each path to a file so it can use it.
In any case because i run a different server for e-mail i created a panel that is
only for - email. So you either search or create a custom solution.
You can always run a microsoft server from home, that is the master server controlling the linux servers.

i belive that the master server is where all the sign ups are done. so there for... a @ home connection would not be something you could really rely on.. esp. w/ most ISP blocking port 80 these days. yes... im aware you can change the port.. or use some kind of port forward service.. but that's nothing im willing to get into.

my point about webmin is that yes.. you have to tell it where the files are... but it works once it's told here things are... which lets you have 100% control of where things are, what options they have built in which then allows webmin to do what it should. just adimn the software.
