View Full Version : Confused about Dot5 Hosting

I've been with Dot5Hosting for a total of 2 days now. After reading many good reviews of their services, I'm feeling rather confused.

Before signing up I submitted one help request with three questions, it was answered fairly quickly, though only one of the three questions were answered. The other two were forwared to the sales department (from whom I have yet to hear) but I have found the answers to the questions elsewhere.

After signing up, I have submitted 3 requests. One, I resolved myself and closed. The other, regarding not recieving a promotion advertised on this site found here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68193) when I signed up has not been answered after over 24 hours.

The other question, why I can't login to FTP or SSH with my assigned username and password has also gone unanswered for over 24 hours. There was one attempt at an answer that basically stated "use the username we sent you" after 10 hours. This didn't work, and it has been well over 15 hours since I re-opened the issue with no response.

I added them to my AOL contact list as well as my MSN contact list, but have never seen them online.

I've noticed that there have been a few posts on this board in the last 24 hours by the employees or owners of Dot5 Hosting, which makes me wonder why they are looking for new customers when one of their newest customers can't even login to his account.

I'm still willing to give Dot 5 Hosting a chance, but I would like to see these problems resolved quickly because I would like to believe that what their website says:At dot5hosting we believe that the support we offer our customers is as important as the packages we offer. is true.

Sure you will get a response from them if they are online at WHT. :)

Dear Friend,

I have no clue about them, however I've read good reviews about them exactly as you did. They seem to be a good company.

Regarding your problem with your FTP login, if you've been given a shared IP address, I guess you've gotta use the following as your FTP and SSH login :

yourusername@yourdomain.com

example, your username is : marcus and your domain is mymarcus.com , I believe this will be your login info:

marcus@mymarcus.com

Hope it will help you.

yeah are you sure your domain name as propagated yet? 2 days doesn't seem like quite enough time, or atleast none of my sites have gone through in 2 days.

Headmaster: Are you sure you don't work for Dot5 ;). I'm kidding.

That was their first reply, almost exactly, to my question when I asked it.

That is also the username (except with my information) I've been trying to use. No luck.

Inogenius: The domain has not propagated yet. In fact, I do not plan to transfer it until the site is completly uploaded and ready to go. This should not effect my ability to log into FTP though.

Thank you both however for your prompt response to my post.

Dear friend,

If your domain is not yet propagated, you ain't able to FTP using your domain. Since the domain doesn't not retaive to any IP address ( not yet propagated ) it cannot be used to FTP or mail server or anything else.

So, if you've been given an IP address, you can start uploading using it. Of course if your account is working functionally.

I hope you changed your nameservers to them for your domain.
You do not state this in your post.
If you did, mine go through from 24 to 36 hours.
I was Dot 5 for a week.
The host I am with now is like having support sitting next to you. Spent all day 2 sundays ago helping me with a problem, and I mean all day!
The name of my host:
http://focalhosting.com/
Putting them on my XMAS list. Have 4 domains with them at this time.
I am not saying anything bad about Dot5, just not for me is all. Nice people and all.

Hi........I am with dot5hosting and always get a prompt reply to my questions...............Did you send your questions to
support@dot5hosting ........... I am also wondering if you changed your DNS nameservers............also

your ftp login has to be ftp.yourdomain.com

username yourname@yourdomain.com

Hope this helps............As I said they are usually very prompt in their replies..........

"I added them to my AOL contact list as well as my MSN contact list, but have never seen them online. "

Does nobody else find this worrying...?

Well again...............I have no trouble getting them on MSN.......however since they are in the UK..........I will say I don't see them online after 6:30 or 7 at night(my time) which is 5 hours later there, but I always get a reply back from support within a couple of hours whenever it happens to be.

If your on Plesk you can login and use ftp before
propagation.
I don't know about the other control panels.

HeadMaster: I'm logging in using the provided IP, not the domain name as the host, so FTP should work before I switch nameservers.

I will say to their credit that they have since addressed both issues I had before. The responses were:
Regarding the discount I was supposed to recieve:
Our accuonts department will remedy this for you ASAP.
I am sorry they have not already replied to you at this point, but I have assigned it to them for resolution.
Please let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

Regarding FTP:
You need to connect to ssh using SSH Version 2.
You can download a Windows SSH Client called Putty from: www.dot5hosting.com/support/putty.exe
Make sure to set it to use version 2 in the SSH section of the Connection Catagory on the left. When you connect specify your username as *******#****.com with password "***". I have already verified that this will work. My apologies for this not being resolved already. The ticket was assigned to another tech who has just left our company.

Please let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

I have not heard back from accounting yet.

I still am unable to login to either FTP or SSH. I've attached an image my attempt at SSH. Perhaps you can point out what I'm doing wrong. Because as far as I can tell, it's nothing. I am still unable to log-in to FTP either.

This may sound really stupid... but did they even create your acount yet?

phpcoder: Yes. I got an email with all the login details.

Just in case you're curious, here's an image of an attempt at logging in to FTP using the IP.

Which I should be able to do, because their email states:Please contact the organization where you registered your domain and update this information if it has not been registered with us. This is critical! Otherwise, you will only be able to access your site via the IP address.

I've been using the FTP address the whole time.

My next email was responded to very quickly and it appears the FTP problem has been solved :) .

For the record, this is what they said:
It seems that the problem is that you are attempting to login to the wrong servers IP address. The IP address that your site is hosted on is "216.***.**.**". I am not certain where you got the other IP address from to use, but I know that there has been a few mixups with our automated Welcome Email generation that could easily have caused this confusion. I am certainly very sorry for the trouble this has caused you.
The problem was with the automated email I got, which had a different IP address. I can now log-in without any problem.

I imagine the accounting problem will be solved tomorrow.

Thanks for those of you who offered your suggestions. I'm feeling much better about the whole situation.
