Are you running phpBB2 or phpBB3?
From what HostGator is saying, your CPU usage is too high for their shared environment. It may benefit you to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server.
benefit_ms 04-21-2008, 06:42 PM phpbb2
which is the best vps, i can't pay too much
does vps have overselling too?

Perhaps the first thing to do is look at this:
We have been forced to suspend the user benefitt from the firehawk server for cpu resource usage. This account was causing a high server spike and causing outages for all users on the server. PLease see our logs below and let us know what can be done to prevent further issues.
Now be honest and let your potential host know EXACTLY what your needs are. If you are getting booted because of heavy usage in a shared environment, perhaps what you need is something a bit more powerful.
I'm gonna guess you need VPS or a Dedicated Server solution instead. Are you running a proxy or something? Typically proxy sites are the ones getting suspension messages like the one you posted.
We (the web host industry) are not all liars. We are here to help. We want to find you the best solution for your needs, and to do that we need to both be honest and upfront about what is required so we can find a solution that gives your site the power and reliability it needs, while not affecting other clients or our network in the process.
That said, next time around when shopping for a host make sure you tell them EXACTLY what you need and what your site requires!!!
Hope this helps... Again no one benefits if both client and host are not mutually happy!
JohnJ 04-21-2008, 07:00 PM I would recommend upgrading to phpBB3. It is much more sophisticated than the legacy version (phpBB2).
The only reliable VPS provider I have used in the past is Future Hosting (http://futurehosting.biz). My support tickets were always answered quickly and effectively and their support team was extremely nice. At one point I was using too much CPU so they upgraded my RAM minimum to let me test things out. I recommend their services to anyone who is looking for an affordable and reliable VPS.
Please see http://futurehosting.biz/vps.htm for their VPS plans and http://futurehosting.biz/specials.html for their VPS specials.
benefit_ms 04-21-2008, 07:07 PM thanks rasputin :: but how they are honest and it's rare to find a host that dosen't oversell and when you ask for your space and traffic they kick you
JohnJ :: thanks for the fast replay
but i can't pay more than 20$/month
does my site really needs vps? i see a lot of forums work on shared hosting

If you want to stay on a shared server, you'll need to find a company that doesn't have crowded servers. You'd also want to look into upgrading to phpBB3, as that cuts security risks and runs a lot smoother. I'd recommend looking around and talking to a few shared hosting companies so that they can see if they meet your needs.
ldcdc 04-21-2008, 07:40 PM Fact is, with forums, you're using big chunks of CPU way before data transfer would be an issue. Rather than overselling, the real issue is the amount you're paying. $10 for a forum pushing 70GB is on the low side. With a site that relies on database(s), you should be looking at paying $0.5-$1 per GB you're pushing (admittedly, opinions on these pricing levels might vary a bit). The farther away you are from this, the riskier your position is.
does my site really needs vps?A VPS could be an option, but a $20 VPS would not be a solution.

The truth is, all shared hosting providers over sell.. That is what "Shared" hosting is.. A shared resource. Shared, CPU time. Shared Drive Space. Shared Bandwidth.. Its all shared...
Now some are less over bloated/overloaded than others, there in lies the difference I suppose. Your best bet is to just explain your needs. If you have needs that require your site be 110% all the time, you know you need good uptime, speed, etc... Then perhaps something outside of the "shared" environment would better suit your needs. This is where a VPS or Dedicated Server comes into play.
If the budget is $20/mo., then the shared hosting is likely where you are going to find the best fit for the money. I guess you will have to weigh the options. What is more important, budget, or power/reliability. It really depends on what your sites needs are, and your expectations are. I would expect to lower your expectations based on your budget. $20/mo. should get you a relatively good/average hosting plan with decent space, and transfer. However, do not expect it to be consistently using 2TB of transfer per month, or something unreasonable like that.
How honest someone is really depends on how well they know your needs. Some hosts may not understand full your requirements, and as such, are not offering the level of service you need. Not because they are dishonest, but because again, they do not understand your need.
JohnJ 04-22-2008, 05:07 PM The truth is, all shared hosting providers over sell
I'd love to know where you got this idea from. There are plenty of hosting providers that do not oversell. Try learning the definition of overselling before claiming that all hosts do it.

Did you read my entire post and put it into the context in which I spoke? I'm guessing no.
I said that all "shared hosting" is over sold. Anything "shared" is going to get over sold. That's what shared hosting is. The concept dates back to the dialup days when dialup was oversold at ratios as high as 10 to 1. Using the law of averages one can safely assume that given the right mix of customers and resources it is entirely possible to achieve a high level of service with over selling.
Push the ratio further, then you have problems... I think you are confusing the concept of over selling in practice with over selling to the point of OVER LOADING!
I've been in the business for over 11 years, that's where the "idea" came from...
Shared = sharing resource with other customers. If all those customers use all those resources all at the same time, things get over loaded...
Dedicated = sharing resources with no one. You use all your resources and no one else affects you.
Shared is oversold
Dedicated is not oversold
If shared hosting was not over sold it would cost 10-100 times more than it does typically.
Shared does not always = bad
Shared does not always = overloaded
I think this is where your confusion is. If you would like more of an explanation, feel free to let me know and I will continue to try to be of help. Thanks!
