Do you need your own merchant account, or do you want to use a third party merchant such as 2co and paypal?

If you want your own merchant account, it would help to know what country you are located in.

You must open a merchant account by applying your bank if you want to accept payments on your web site. This solution can be provide by your bank only.

Real merchant accounts, like those that use the gateways ephasenetworks listed, deposit the money directly to your bank account. Sometimes they hold some funds as a "reserve" to cover fees, charge backs, etc.

You need a merchant account provider and an electronic payment gateway (Payflow, LinkPoint / YourPay / IIP, Authorize.net / Cybersource, Quantum, etc).

Most banks will contract the merchant account processing out because it is usually not the banks business. You will see some overlap from time to time (i.e. Chase / Paymentech) and with the larger banks.
