May I know what are the implications of not having a dedicated IP Address on a shared hosting platform?

I learnt that:

(1) a dedicated IP is required for a private SSL certificate

(2) it can be used to ftp into a site

(3) some gave it free of charge, some charge for a one-time setup, some charge a monthly cost

Question:
But will a dedicated IP address result in greater security?

Meaning that a dedicated IP will prevent other owners on the same server from coming in and accidentally browse your files?

The dedicated IP would still link to the same server..So the security would be pretty much the same.

The server, if properly administered, shouldn't allow other users on the same server to browse your files..

Even if its not dedicated ip, any server will not allow such a thing if its cpanel based, plus each folder gets assigned a user and other users cannot view internally files of other users, unless files are put in public_html folder with no password protection or anything if thats what you meant by browsing files, even if its on dedicated ip , if its public people can still access browse the files if not protected by owner of account , nothing to do with server security there.

And bottom line is dedicated ip servers the best purpose when used for SSL reasons other than that i see no additional benefits of dedicated ip (other than pvt nameservers maybe).

By the way :
it can be used to ftp into a site, even if you are on shared ip it has same features, nothing special in regards to dedicated ip !!

What leads you to believe that others are allowed to browse your files?

Having a dedicated IP-address has no correlation with added security.

Are you interested in hosting providers that offers dedicated IP-addresses, or? :)

(3) some gave it free of charge, some charge for a one-time setup, some charge a monthly cost

normally FREE for dedicated server or VPS, because two dedicated IP addresses will be used for nameserver.

Some people believe having dedicated IP's can help with SEO, but it's unproven.

That is correct, it does not help, only helps when google bot or some other bot , bans a single shared ip ! Cause than the dedicated ip will not be there on their ban list of not to crawl list

The dedicated IP address would offer zero security benefits. A dedicated IP would offer the advantage of a SSL certificate to be installed, as you mentioned.

thank you for the replies, people

at least it clear up one point in my mind

i remembered reading an article by those who make recommendations on web hosts, that there are some who when you telnet into the server and issue some commands, you can see the files of others. That is why chmod is very important. I can't recall how i make the connection between this and a non-dedicated address and i cannot locate that article again.

But it is good to know that non-dedicated address does not lead to such a security issue and the 'fault' lies with how the server is configured.

Cheers,
