Hi,

as i know, many people use alertra.com to monitor their server,

when server is down, admin will get the notify,

but i wonder if there are any software ( i can install it on my pc ),

and it connect all my servers,

the monitor will show all the info (load,httpd,ftpd,mail,...etc) on the page,

and i can check all the status of all the servers quickly and easily.

i feel the alertra.com is too slow,

because it will notify when the server is down,

i hope a program can show the status in (on) time,

and it can let me avoid the server down.

thanks

Can you clarify what you mean by alertra.com being too slow? Do you mean it's not checking frequently enough? Or that the outage notifications are taking too long to get to you?

There are a number of software packages you could use if you want to setup things yourself, including open source packages such as Nagios, Zabbix, Zenoss and others. There are also desktop applications you can use for this, although unless you're on a very reliable network connection you probably don't want to go this route.

Hi,

Can you clarify what you mean by alertra.com being too slow? Do you mean it's not checking frequently enough? Or that the outage notifications are taking too long to get to you?

httpd down may be caused by many reason,

of of them is the load too high, and the server slow to response httpd connection.

so,the load of a server may be 3,then 10,the 20,the50,...then the httpd with no response,

and alertra.com will find the server is down and notify the admin,

i think it is too slow, because the server is really down.

but if i can monitor the load of the server in (on) time,

and i can know the load value of the server from the dashboard directly,

i will have more time to check it before the load become to 50 and server down.

i hope it will be more clear. :)

thanks

If you want to monitor from your own computer I would recommend Nagios. Regarding monitoring services, you should consider smaller monitoring periods to get alerts as soon as downtime occurs.

On the other hand, remember that monitoring software loads your server with additional requests, and if you are going to test http each second, it may become abusing.

Zenoss is a good tool and a little easier than Nagios to fully setup. You can set it on your home network to get a remote check if you want to or in another colo. We have 2 facilities and have 2 Zenoss setups that monitor all of the network/server components. This allows onsite/offsite performance checks and if one site goes down we can see it happen.

Yea BB has been around for a long time. Nagios and then Zenoss came around making configs easier to understand and adding more features/MIBs.

cacti www.cacti.net is also a nice monitoring tool with a lot of plugins, like threshold, weathermap. etc.

for just few server someting like SIM will be very useful (if your server stat on Linux base O/S). You can look into SIM at this url http://www.rfxnetworks.com/downloads/
