Like how much bandwidth, space etc. Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 09:00 PM Wanna buy a good domain name for this Tim?? ;) :D TimPD 08-20-2002, 09:06 PM What domain?? Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 09:07 PM You figure it out. ;) dandanfirema 08-20-2002, 09:07 PM To answer your original question. I would say bandwidth, space, control, and number of customers per server. Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 09:11 PM Semi-dedicated servers are tricky but they're doable, IMO. You're competing with dedicated servers becoming more affordable etc. I'd say go top of the line with dual chips, multiple SCSI drives with RAID5, 3GB RAM+ etc, VPS...etc. 10 accounts per server - $75 to $100/mth per account. 7GB disk space and 75GB data transfer or 100GB if you oversell a touch etc... TimPD 08-20-2002, 09:35 PM They wouldn't get root access.... TimPD 08-20-2002, 09:41 PM We was more thinking something like the following specs: Intel Celeron 1.7GHz 60GB Hard drive 512 Of Ram or Intel Pentinum 1.13 512 of Ram 60GB Hard Drive AMD XP 1800 256MB DDR 80GB HD also considering the following Dual 1.13ghz 2GB Of Ram 60GB HD (Mods if this is advertising please feel free to move to the correct forum)) Jedito 08-20-2002, 09:58 PM I suggest to use SCSI HD for those servers. That will help you in the server load. Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 09:59 PM Originally posted by TimPD They wouldn't get root access.... even still, I think you still should go for the VPS platform. It's a tough plan to put together. Getting the revenue up to a profitable level and keeping the server stable is a tad harder with this environment. It's doable though and there's folks out there who would pay the extra $$$$ to be on a machine with 5 or 6 others. But if you're charging $100/mth per account, then they're only a hop skip and a jump away from their own server... The margins would be tighter than standard reseller servers etc. TimPD 08-20-2002, 10:05 PM VPS is a good option but it isn't easy to configure.. Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 10:11 PM Originally posted by TimPD VPS is a good option but it isn't easy to configure.. especially with WHM/CPanel   TimPD 08-20-2002, 10:24 PM your Right LOL pm me with that domain ;). Techark 08-20-2002, 10:25 PM How many accounts are your planning on putting on one of those machines you listed and what size accounts? fractiousws 08-20-2002, 10:36 PM Originally posted by Monte How many accounts are your planning on putting on one of those machines you listed and what size accounts? Just looks like an attempt for a chance to flame us as usual so I am not going to bother answering. Techark 08-20-2002, 10:53 PM  OK James what ever you say.. It is a legit question, if Tim really wants an answer to which machines to use for semi dedicated. Besides Tim is the one that started this thread, and posted the specs of the machines. Sounds to me like you are getting a little defensive there. Worried about something? BC 08-20-2002, 11:00 PM Ahem. Let's keep this constructive please. Thank you. fractiousws 08-20-2002, 11:17 PM Originally posted by BC Ahem. Let's keep this constructive please. Thank you. Hey look who it is, BC. Your a site for sore eyes  Lost that so called "Life offline eh?" :D Originally posted by Monte ...Sounds to me like you are getting a little defensive there. Worried about something? With that one small sentance you have proved my entire point. Listen, if you got a problem with me email me, IM me, PM me just stop insulting me every chance you get in public. Techark 08-20-2002, 11:26 PM Your the one that is getting all upset over a legit question how is that an insult? Geez James my post was not even addressed to you but to Tim. My point to TIM being if you are going to put more than two or three accounts of any size as a semi dedicated 512 mem is going to get real touchy with server load especialy if they use it to resell from and load it up with resold accounts. No how is that flaming? Aussie Bob 08-20-2002, 11:56 PM Originally posted by fractiousws Just looks like an attempt for a chance to flame us as usual so I am not going to bother answering. Nope, it was a genuine question. I'd put 6 to 10 accounts at the most etc... fractiousws 08-21-2002, 01:19 AM Originally posted by Aussie Bob Nope, it was a genuine question. I'd put 6 to 10 accounts at the most etc... Why yes it was a genuine question but Bob...you should be able to see behind it too. For the last while he has been acting like he has a beef against us for some reason, so me thinking this is not out of the regular. No how is that flaming? Me and Tim own EARHost so I think I do have a right to address this. Just listen dude, lately you have been bashing me/EARHost every chance you had, so what do you expect me to think. I wasn't getting upset, all I asked is if you do have a problem with me/EARHost contact me in private and we can talk :) Techark 08-21-2002, 02:33 AM Just listen dude, lately you have been bashing me/EARHost every chance you had, so what do you expect me to think. Where have I bashed you James? I recall where we got into it on the money switching thread but other than that I have pretty much kept my mouth shut on anything to do with you and your new venture. I think you are getting a little edgy there, others have taken shots at you allot more than I have. If I wanted to take shots at you and Tim I could take a few, in the future if you do not want comments then I suggest you do not post in a public forum asking for them. fractiousws 08-21-2002, 12:38 PM Feel free to take your shots, I don't really care what you think. All I care about is what my customers think, and they are very happy with the serives they have been receiving. Keep them clients happy for all of us. :) IMO, Monte was being genuine. I'm pretty good at picking up alterior motives and loaded questions etc.... fractiousws 08-21-2002, 04:52 PM Originally posted by Aussie Bob Good for you James. What I was thinking, but I could be and probably am wrong is that he was waiting for us to say like 15 or something and then jump on that. But like I said I probably got him wrong. netacore 08-21-2002, 09:25 PM Originally posted by Aussie Bob But if you're charging $100/mth per account, then they're only a hop skip and a jump away from their own server... I'm sure if it's dubbed as a 'managed service' it would be worthwhile. However, it depends on which market you advertise to. Outside of WHT, it is still difficult to find a $99 machine that is up to par for webserving. BC 08-22-2002, 01:51 AM  |
