View Full Version : .com Change WHOIS and then Transfer the domain
PromoXL 04-10-2008, 07:07 AM Dear wht friends,
I want to change the WHOIS of a .com domain name that I own and the same day I want to transfer the domain.
Is this possible? Our is there a buffer within a domain can't be transfered after a whois change.
My ISP tells me I need to wait 14 days, but then I need to pay a whole new year for my domain.
Kind regards,
John
demil 04-10-2008, 07:14 AM Well this depends from registrar to registrar.
If you are at Goddady, then have fun getting stuck with the domain, I know people who lost domains like that.
Try to transfer with the "invalid whois" data and change after transfer is finished, in most of the cases works.
PromoXL 04-10-2008, 07:19 AM My domain is handled by DirectI and my ISP isn't a registrar, but has a account with DirectI.
demil 04-10-2008, 07:24 AM Why you need to change whois data upfront? Invalid email and key goes there?
PromoXL 04-10-2008, 07:29 AM E-mail and domain owner. I just sold the domain. And don't want my details to been transfered to a third party.
demil 04-10-2008, 07:33 AM Well the problem is like this:
Imagine is some "friend" which will get your domain administration password. Change whois informations and transfer to another registrar. After that he will be the owner and will be a different registrar and you can't do anything about that anymore.
If somebody wanted your data, could pay some $ and get that allready don't worry.
PromoXL 04-10-2008, 07:39 AM But what your saying is that the current ISP is applying there own rules. .COM could be transfered always, even if the whois is changed.
demil 04-10-2008, 07:46 AM Not quite. For example in first 60 days you can't.
Maybe reading ICANN will help you a bit:)
http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm
... on top of this, can be ToS what you agreed on signup ...
PromoXL 04-10-2008, 07:53 AM Correct, the first 60 days after a transfer. I read the ICANN policy. But couldn't find any info about changing the WHOIS and then transferring the domain.
For example:
Someone logged in your account and changed the whois details and then transfers the domain to a new registrar.
Thats a scenario that could happen. Then it will be safe to let no one transfer the domain after the change of there whois. For example the 60 days procedure after a transfer.
demil 04-10-2008, 08:09 AM Well like I said, depends on ToS most probably, ask your registrar. From ICANNs point of view, as far as I know registrars can't popup the "oh you changed whois informations" to decline transfer.
But like I said, some registrars do that, even Godaddy.
netearth 04-13-2008, 12:16 PM GoDaddy keeps trying this 60 day whois thing, but if it is in their tos, then you signed up to it.
With regards someone hijacking your account, get a better and more secure password.
RajanUrs 04-13-2008, 01:39 PM E-mail and domain owner. I just sold the domain. And don't want my details to been transfered to a third party.
Tell your buyer to create another account and push the domain to it. When you push the domain to another account there is an option not to retain the registrant, admin, technical, billing contact details after the domain name is moved.
There is no cost for pushing to another account and it is almost instantaneous. You have to get the buyers account id number and email correct.
