View Full Version : When is a RAQ better than a normal server?
Blikje 08-20-2002, 02:04 PM The subject covers the topic, when is a RAQ better than a normal Linux server? From what I see a normal server has a more powerfull processor, more memory and a bigger hard disk!
On the other hand, have I heard that a RAQ has such an easy management panel even a child can host sites. Is that the only plus, or are there more I am just to stupid to see :D
Thank you in advance,
Jacco
it isnt just for the host the control panel is also for the hosts client, most hosting clients wouldnt know step one for adding an email user without some sort of control panel. as such control panels are essential for hosting companies. its just one of many options avaliable out there, and the server is also only 1 u in height so it takes a lot less space than a standard server

... And you're right... you can get better hardware than anything a RaQ can offer...
eddy2099 08-20-2002, 04:30 PM I got a RaQ because my sites outgrowth the specifications of a shared hosting environment. Being 'pampered' along the way and knowing almost nothing about web administration or linux, the RaQ is a god-send.
Apart from the interface, I know that the hardware is closed to identical as the next RaQ in production. The ability to patch the server through PKG and the easy to use interface helped me a great deal.
Plesk and Ensim are great but they are tailored towards web hosting as a business. For me, my requirement is that the server be exclusive to me and to my business. I am not running a web hosting business but just a customer who outgrown the shared environment.
Also, I like the email setup in the RaQ because I travel a lot and depend on my trusty GPRS cellular phone to check for emails and reply to them if needed. With the Plesk setup, I just cannot get my Cellular phone to contact to the POP3 server. With the RaQ it was so simple.
I would probably not trade the RaQ for anything else, except maybe another RaQ or W2K hosting. But that is another story altogether.

A child being able to host isnt an advantage :)
j/k
archie2 08-21-2002, 04:04 AM I do not see any child hosting the sites. Which is better is always a debatable question. It all depends on your requirements and how your programers feel comfortable with.
Welcome to the forums :) If you run a web host and are over 12, you are a minority :) j/k
Blikje 08-21-2002, 12:54 PM Before this gets out of hand, I am not a child of 12 years wanting to be a host! It was just an excample of how easy the control panel is. I am way much older (uhum, 18 years) and setting up my own business (which is easier said that done in the Netherlands). I decided to go with a normal Linux server and no RAQ. Not that I don't like it, but I like better(faster) hardware more :D

wow wow wow, chill out. i was only playing around, never said you were 12, your comments sounded like "its an advantage that even a child can host" - i was just joining in and saying thats not an advantage :)
Nothing personal, just a joke :)

Woops, my post sounded angrier than is was supposed to. Maybe it is not an advantage, but more an indication of the ease of the panel (or something like that :D)
I know you was joking :)
Cool :) Happens too often that peoples emotions dont show in forums :(

True! Most of the times I am laughing my butt off (looks stupid for others when you are laughing at your screen :D) and in a topic it looks than like I am angry! And silly emoticons like this :smokin: won't help than :D
