hello,

This is a welcome addition and many will sure STRONGLY feel the same..!

However, i wish, along with PHP, other scripting languages like ASP and CGI, cold fusion were also included, with the DB help also ??

Any takers ??

Or is it by default included ??

I am not sure, if this post fits in here..may be...the suggestions forum would be more suitable, if so...Mods please feel free to move it and I am sorry for inconvenience, If any !

I really don't see alot of posts about Perl, ASP, or CFML here...

PHP is a largely used programming language here, and also RS is sponsoring PHP.net....

Maybe if this was just a Coding Forum it might better, because I don't see alot of use in a CFML/Perl/ASP forum...

how about JSP/Servlets?

Its a growing market as well.

I think it would be cool if, instead of including this as part of the 'Main Forums', they created a programming forums category. Then forums on whatever language could be added as needed.

The forum list is to long already...

Maybe a General coding forum, and have subforums inside it...

PHP/Perl/ASP/CFML/JSP/TCL/etc..

I think something similiar to what freewebspace.net has...only one forum ( no sub forums ) would suffice which would include all the scripting languages support !

Actually, there may not be much threads other than PHP, that sure would increase in the long run, but it makes sense including them b'cos...there are quite a few hosts offering such features...and it would sure benefit to those needy !

Just my 2 cents

There must be some kind of deal with www.php.net .. because if you look to the top right there is an advert for here :) (announcing the new PHP board too..)

And no offense to anyone, what whad does PHP (from a coding point of view) have to do with webhosting?

There is no real connection... But there have been several questions in the lounge about PHP, either for scripting help, or where to find something...

I personally feel this was added for two reasons.

1 the link to WHT on php.net
2.A lot of webhosting software that companies use is php/mysql.

It's just a publicity stunt to get a link on php.net  . That said, PHP is the most common serverside language and many hosting issues involve PHP in some way.

They didn't just add the forum to get a link on php.net... They got the link on php.net by either hosting the entire site, or making a large 'donation' to them :D

And you really can't say PHP is the most popular serverside language, Perl is alot more popular mainly because of how long its been around...

I like PHP better, but Perl is still very very popular...

I have to agree with benoire on this one. Most PHP issues are to do with web design and programming, not hosting. The section of PHP that did fall under the 'hosting' category, such as configuring PHP on a server fell under the 'Technical & Security Issues' forum. Since when has WebHostingTalk changed direction to cater as a programming and web design community as well as a hosting community.

rochen,

That was my thought (not that my thoughs matter ). I can totally understand things like properly setting up safe mode, which options to compile in etc.

There are many, many other forums much more directly related to PHP that I'd visit for PHP programming issues.

Well, no matter where on the page the forum is or what other languages feel shafted...this should be a really awesome information source. :)

Whoops, my bad... as I was typing I was thinking of PHP v ASP/ColdFusion/JSP etc... you're quite right in that Perl is also very popular, though I'd say the take up of PHP is now greater than that of Perl.

Might have been a little bias in there too :D

Coming from a diehard PHP programmer that doesn't like Perl at all: Perl still is by far the most popular server-side programming language on the internet. PHP has certainly made an impressive showing (considering it's 7 or 8 years younger then Perl).

Yes you can find a nickel and dime PHP programmer anywhere (if you like crappy code) but when it comes to professional companies, in my opinion, Perl is still king (though not forever ;)).

I love PHP - its a fantastically easy way to get dynamic content into ur web site.

However, IMO - perl cannot and will not be beaten as a server side scripting language.

I do a lot of PHP stuff but always find myself being dragged back to perl.

But people generally stick to what they are used too.

Come on - turn this into PHP & PERL discussion, pleeze. :)

Hold ur horses m8 PERL 6 knocking on ur Door :)

Agree 100% about crappy code part -> Pet hate with PHP and JS that, both allow very sloppy coding that PERL would drag u back and slap u around the head for especialy if coding under Strict (And if you not coding PERL under strict you are a fool)

This thread was started with the intention of possibility of including other scripting languages also along with PHP, but its turning out to be debate on which scripting language is better/popular !

If the reasons ( mentioned here) for starting off this new forum is to be accepted, they could even ask for a link from corresponding sites of other scripting languages and include those lagnuages also for discussion !??
