Hosting firms running off 128k? Maybe back in 1996 cause you can't host many sites on something like that. Hosting on dsl or cable is not very reliable. I have my dsl go down for a many hours. Plus you don't have proper cooling of a data facility. Maybe you could host it off dsl for a your own business but other than that you won't have much room to grow.

Then you need permission from your ISP and must have static IPs.

You don't need static IP's =)

Because, no back up power supply, no 24/7 techs to make sure the server stays online and no proper cooling.

it's a good way to practice and learn
get your own site up
play with dns
DEFINATELY not a way to attract customers though
i personally do reverse lookups on any provider i'm dealing with to PREVENT dealing with this kinda stuff

Yes, the 128Kbps connection could handle it if the website is not too busy.

If it's your own website then you can do whatever you wish to do, but if you're hosting other people's businesses (ie: how they pay their mortgages, and feed their children) then don't do it. Hosting has a level of responsibility with it, and a part of meeting that responsibility is providing good, multiple, providers, housed in a quality datacenter.

k,, was thinking of getting a cheap server setup and hooking it to my cable line, getting online with 56k and playing with server...

I was use the server for exerimentation purposes for software, admin, and hardware stuff... getting a feell of them inside out..

If it's just for the purpose of learning then it should be just fine.

Since my name is dandanfirema(n) and rightly so. I will give you a fireground analogy. It is kind of like putting out a structure fire with a straw and a cup of water.
