View Full Version : My Dedicated Hosting Prices, Acceptable?
arjun 08-19-2002, 09:48 PM I'm thinking of leasing some dedicated servers:
Cobalt RaQ3 @
500Mhz CPU
512MB RAM
30GB HD
RaQ4 OS
20 GB TIER-1 MULTI-HOMED Bandwidth: Cable & Wireless, Genuity, Sprint, BellSouth, BGP4
$100 / month, $50 setup (setup waived if from WHT). These are unmanaged servers, however, we are only responsible for keeping the cobalt (plus any third party software we install for the customer) up-to-date with security patches
This machine will outperform any stock RaQ4.
Are these prices realistic?
netdude 08-19-2002, 11:07 PM bit expensive considering the amount of b/w included... i do understand its quality... but still...
arjun 08-19-2002, 11:10 PM what if I could do it for $85 / month
creid 08-19-2002, 11:23 PM I think $100 is good... Don't listen to them... Everyone here at WHT are Cheapies :D

okihost 08-19-2002, 11:26 PM Seems ok providing you have good support, uptime etc. I mean most people around here are so used to getting p4 servers with a gig of memory and 400gb of bandwidth that they would not even think about taking and offer like that up.. I would say you would need to get a decent reputation first.. If you are just starting out maybe offer something like 75 a mo. 75 setup and 50gb bw and you might get some bites.. good luck..
arjun 08-19-2002, 11:51 PM perhaps, though for top quality bandwidth that's extremely hard to pull.
tribby 08-20-2002, 12:00 AM Maybe a little pricey considering that it is unmanaged.
arjun 08-20-2002, 12:48 AM I'll offer basic support. managed servers $120 extra
UmBillyCord 08-20-2002, 12:53 PM 500Mhz CPU
It is actually a 300 MHz AMD.
arjun 08-20-2002, 01:26 PM The processor was replaced with a 550 MHz processor and UNDER-clocked to 500 MHz
UmBillyCord 08-20-2002, 02:05 PM Interesting, since you must really know Cobalt to do this. That I would like to see.
arjun 08-20-2002, 02:58 PM what do you mean you would like to see?
i think what he means is unless your pretty handy with a soldering iron you can not upgrade a raq 3 to anything beyond a 300 mhz processor because it wont work at anything beyond 300 mhz no matter what you put in it.

netdude 08-20-2002, 03:27 PM got an IP for traceroutes/etc? don't think too highly of your bandwidth... there are companies like hostmania on here that offer 400GB of internap for $100/month... heh

oh... and this ain't top... if u were on exodus, that'd be top... this is just high... (and being on C&W is NOT the same as being o exodus)...
arjun 08-20-2002, 03:42 PM well hostmania has their flaws as do all hosting places. what quality is internap ?
netdude 08-20-2002, 09:43 PM internap is premium... not because of all their connecitivity (although thats impressive too)... but because of their routing technology... they don't use BGP... BGP is based around going through as few networks as possible to get to the desination... not as few hops / lowest latency (not saying fewer hops means less latency) to get to the destination... internap's routing doesn't take into consideration fewest hops... it takes into consideration lowest latency... which is quite innovative... heh... and in the end, very fast... internap doesn't really own a backbone... just connections to all the big guys in every city they have a POP... heh
archie2 08-21-2002, 05:59 PM I wouldn'd purchase it basically because there are lots of companies out there offering the same price with a lot more bandwith..
netdude 08-21-2002, 08:17 PM archie2, you're in a different area of the market... you're in the budget side... the quality side is for those that value their sites more than life itself (their sites are their lives)... and don't want to lose a single visitor of traffic because a competitor's site is faster... ... ...
