i was just wondering how is rackshack compaired to dialtone or rackspace? They are offering that 400gb/month deal for 99 a month? Is there a catch? Are they reliable? Fast? Whats the down low?

It's hard to say - nobody ever talks about them around here.

this place is owned and hosted by rackshack... so we can't really talk much about them here... heh...

all that i can say is that... if you expect to need any support, rackshack is NOT the way to go... if you're a seasoned server administration professional, rackshack is cool, their network is decent and reliable... although they do have hardware problems (cheap/poor hardware failing) often... heh... but once all cleared, its stable as a rock... :)

make sure you keep backups of all your data

Nick,

I just currently got my server on rackshack but have no experience with dialtone or rackspace. But for that price, it is good value though.

The bandwidth computation on RS includes both incoming and outgoing traffic, if that is a catch. They are basically unmanaged except for server reboots, physical upgrades and they do provide a very very limited level of tech support. I am sure that running your own web hosting business, you would be familiar with setting up a server and all that, so that probably is fine.

Issues such as backups and program installation would be your own responsibility. The speed is actually not bad. Pretty fast compared to what I was getting.

As for downtime, I have not experience any expect during the time when my DNS was being populated.

There are people who complained about faulty hardware and so on. They did had trouble with their AMD based system because the fan wasn't doing too well and the system keeps overheating causing it to hang. So if you are interested, opt for the Intel based systems unless it is a RaQ that you are after.

Overall, for $99, I got no complains.

yeah, agreed... for $99, its an excellent offer... especially considering they have some mid-range bandwidth in there... not just cheap bullsh*t... :)

Rackshack is a very professional company, however when it comes to support, their expertise is limited. However, they tell you this in black and white (or some color :D ) that this is the case. Their "scope" of support widdles down to hardware repairs/replacements and technical support.

Other than that, Rackshack is fine. As long as you are a decent system administor, because RS is not even CLOSE to being managed dedicated.

hehe, im with dialtone right now. They are SUPER friendly people, if i have a problem, or just have a stupid question, or just want to bull**** their people are ALWAYS there to talk to via the internet, email, or on the phone. They are super friendly, they will do quite a bit to your server without even charging you money. I recommend them highly :)

I cannot doubt you on that. But the point is that Dialtone is offering a Managed Dedicated service and Rackshack is offering an Unmanaged Dedicated service.

Of course, hardware and bandwidth features for features, I would not be surprised that Rackshack is way cheaper but you basically pay for what you get.

I do hear a lot of good things about Dialtone though but never used them as yet. The prices are good for what it is worth but a little steep for my budget.

Do a search of the forums, as they have been extensively discussed here in the past.

IMO, comparing Rackshack to Rackspace is like comparing chalk to cheese. ;)

As long as you don't mind spending an hour with your server a week plus say a few hours for installation, Rackshack offer a good deal.

The more servers you get with them, the easier you find admining them too...

The more servers you get with them, the easier you find admining them too... Rackshack servers really do take time to manage, since it's completely unmanaged. The statement made be edb49 is certainly true though, it does get far easier to manage a Rackshack servers the more of their servers that you have, since I privately manage quite a few Rackshack servers and it just get's easier as you learn the usual problems that occur with their servers.

Rackspace and Rackshack are on completely different ends of a stick, one is at the top end and the other is right at the bottom, so comparison between these two companies would not be a fair one. If you don't need the 400GB (and most people don't) and your website is commercial, I would suggest for you to use Rackspace instead, especially since it's more stable and also you'll have all the support that you'll need from their support teams.

dude... rackshack is NOT at the bottom... support wise maybe... but... they have a pretty good mid-range network... sure as hell beats the dime-a-dozen cogent-only (or cogent+yipes or some other cheapo combination like that) providers... heh... rackshack's network is quite good actually... the higher end of mid-range... heh

i'd rate bandwidth into one of 4 quality levels...
#1 : premium - we all know who they are... and can't afford 'em... cuz they're for the special people (i am saying that sarcastically) like ebay, nasdaq, google, etc... (take note, hostmania/etc do offer internap bandwidth for us regular folk... yet to see a major dedicated server provider leveraging exodus tho)
#2 : high end - worldcom, c&w, genuity, att, sprint
#3 : mid range - verio, level3
#4 : cheapo/cr*p/bullsh*t - cogent, epik, yipes, twtelecom, williams

there are more providers out there that i haven't mentioned... but u can usually put them in their own place urselves...

but yipes itself, i'd put higher in the cheapo section because their providers are somewhat decent (primarily level3)... networks like epik i find disappointing... heh... twtelecom and williams are also somewhat decent and might fall under mid-range, but don't think so...

Sorry, I've just realised that I didn't mean 'bottom'... I meant they are in two completely different markets, they are both aiming for different people with different web hosting needs.

I think Alan was mainly referring to the quality of support when he said Rackshack was at the bottom versus Rackspace

I used to have one Server there; one of my hosting client did a

Hacking Forum, and Rackshack has UPLUGGED my Server without

any prior notice so that I could kill that shi*t site :bawling:

I think they should inform me about it, it was out of my control

i'm not to fond of their irc chat system. Took me 30mins till i received an answer about bandwidth pricing, and charges.

Well, in terms of hardware problems...

They do not manage it either.
I took around more than three days to ask them to just "investigate" but FAILED.
during that week, my server went down several times everyday.

Then I yelled for help here, Patrics showed up and fixed it in one day.

be aware of this cause you are taking your own risk of hadrware and rackshack do not take any responsibilities on that.

the solutions rackshack can make for your hardware are
1. ask you to reboot
2. ask you to restore
3. then you have to ask for patricks here.

rs is not bad for personal site, but not business for sure.
