Hello,

Whenever trying to install an .RPM, which is somtimes needed to make routine upgrades to the system, I'm receiving the following error:

only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM

Now this is a known bug that is in RPM 3.04, and the simple solution is to upgrade to RPM 4. But it's really not that simple, because the only install files that I've found for RPM 4 were RPM files (pretty dumb eh?) so theirs really no way to upgrade. Others have told me to "Install them off a CD" - HAHA, right.

So now I'm left without the ability to make routine updates that my server depends on.

What was 4Webspace's response?
The same one for every question, "We don't support that".
My question is what DO THEY SUPPORT? It feels as though I'm colocating a server with them rather than a dedicated, because with colocation your required to provide your own support, and dedicated the company helps out (after all it's their server).

Any Ideas?

My understanding is that RPM4 is only supported with the latest version of RedHat. So, in order to use an RPM-4 based file you would need to have the Red Hat 7.0 kernal installed on the system.

Obviously, you cannot upgrade the kernel of the RaQ (not without breaking a lot of other stuff). Your best bet is to find the the source tar.gz files and install them. That will usually work.

I would like to point out, in 4Webspace's defense, that their response is correct. These types of upgrades are not supported. If they were to advise you and their advice lead to your RaQ getting screwed up, you would undoubtedly expect them to correct it.
