how is their tech support?

they don't offer that much disk space for their prices but they give the impression of being reliable...... are they?

You probably won't find any scary stories about DreamHost. I have been with them for more than 3 year. For MOST of the time, they are doing a very good job. And even with the rare occasions when things were not good (no matter whose fault), they will try their best to fix it. Really nice guys, I would say (particularly the old boys who found and started the company). And if you are a designer, you'll be glad to learn that this is a hosting company that was put together by a bunch of your likes.
