View Full Version : SSL certificate and site security
doomos 04-01-2008, 11:09 AM Hi,
I wanted to know a good place to get SSL thats under $100/year and is known-secure.
I also have a question about site security and certificates. Many of the ecommerce sites I see have PayPal verified, VeriSign, hacksafe, godaddy SSL certificates. But when I look at major companies like amazon, ebay, sears, or etc, they don't have any of those.
What I'm asking is, doesn't it scare off the customer when you have many of these certificates to show that you're "safe"? I figured the less I have, the more they'll think I'm professional. I mean, do online clients really check whether I process credit cards through authorize.net or not?
Let me know you guy's findings. Also please let me know simply what business you're running. (Shoe store, web hosting, etc)
kemuel 04-02-2008, 05:24 PM GoDaddy didn't seem recognised by everyone just yet. I've had cheap SSL certificates that gave me no issues though. I think most people are just glad when it says 'safe' and not "Warning this certificate is not recognized". (I run a web hosting company.) My first SSL cert I got was from registerfly I think. Gave me less issues than GoDaddy but may be less known. As for the multiple certificate question. I don't think it scares them off, but they all have a different purpose. The hacksafe and paypal verified aren't SSL certificates but just extra siteseals. I don't think anyone has multiple SSL seals and it seems either complicated or impossible to get two kinds of SSL verification up at one time.
HostColor 04-04-2008, 01:50 PM There are companies which sale SSL for less than $50/year. Just search whithin the Advertising forums.
WhiteRabbitFL 04-04-2008, 03:23 PM I've seen many people recommend RapidSSL, I think they're like under $20.
Mike Web Host 04-05-2008, 04:56 PM Comodo is very reasonable, I believe about $60/year if you are reseller and it is easy to become a reseller. Check their site for details instantssl.com as I signed up a few years ago.
teachforjune-Scott 04-05-2008, 08:26 PM Innohosting.com has various ssl certs for really cheap. They have rapidssl as well as geotrust. check them out.
doomos 04-07-2008, 09:20 AM ok, I got an SSL certificate.
Now the question is, how much site seals I'll display in my site and how many is enough.
Back to my 2nd question,
"I also have a question about site security and certificates. Many of the ecommerce sites I see have PayPal verified, VeriSign, hacksafe, godaddy SSL certificates. But when I look at major companies like amazon, ebay, sears, or etc, they don't have any of those.

Corey Bryant 04-09-2008, 06:08 PM A bit too late, but I would have recommended Comodo - they offer you a verification symbol as well.
Most of the times, the regular consumer never heard of Authorize.net / Cybersource, LinkPoint / YourPay / Integrated Internet Payments, Payflow, Quantum, etc. You have the cons of adding that to your website and hoping that the people that do know the company will feel a bit better on the process.
On the other hand, now you are telling the company that this company is processing the credit card transaction. What's going on with that? I thought I was buy a pair of shoes and now I see another company.
Most will never know what electronic payment gateway you are using unless you tell them. And usually it will never matter to them.
Let the consumer see your security with the https - maybe even have a little page explaining to the them what this means. And if you want, have a page that explains the transaction process etc. This might help show the consumer you care and maybe help them understand the process. And on the other hand, this might cause more people to call wanting to know more or understand even more.
Hardcurrency 04-10-2008, 02:26 PM We are using Comodo and they have many different options with some very reasonable pricing. There is also (instantssl dot com) that is also Comodo but is has very very reasonable pricing.
