View Full Version : free hosts
scottmberry 08-19-2002, 02:34 PM could someone please give me some free hosts that offer PHP and FTP access.
Possible free domain included
VISIT MY SITE (http://ocram.vze.com)
Big-Mike 08-19-2002, 02:40 PM I was gonna say lycos.co.uk but I see your site is hosted there already. Other then that I know http://www.netfirms.com
As far as free urls www.******** is ok. you can get yourname.******** and they don't have any adds or anything. They also offer a lot of other features such as guestbooks, @yourname.******** mail and more
smidwap 08-19-2002, 02:50 PM You aren't going to find any free domains, maybe free subdomains though.
ShagHost 08-19-2002, 04:13 PM scottmberry, tried to take a look at your site, but there were
so many pop up ads I gave up.
:smokin: ShagHost

Yea,
By the way you may even check out bizhosting.com, they too offer sub-domain hosting..
Vinayak_Sharma 08-19-2002, 05:03 PM Try hosting at http://www.portland.co.uk
okihost 08-19-2002, 06:23 PM I am also looking for the above but I would also like a free BMW 7 series and a free bag of hot fries if possible..
ServerSonic 08-19-2002, 06:52 PM Last I checked ******** was flooding all their sites with popups and ads...
Anyways you can get a free domain name from www.dot.tk. It is a .tk domain but it is still free and not a subdomain:)
I guess spaceports (http://www.spaceports.com) has PHP installed:)
The prices that people are offering in the web hosting requests forum, you could probably get free hosting from there... ya never know these days;-)

You might have a hard time finding someone that gives you a free bag of hot fries....
Wasn't there a host giving out cars before? Something like 1/500 customers would get a new car.
smidwap 08-19-2002, 06:56 PM Yes, but I can't remember who at the moment.

here you get free hosting of your domain or they also give you yourdomain.port5.com for free plus mysql (remote connection allowed) ftp, php every thing you need.
And they are really good,
I have hosted http://www.zenofficesystems.com there check it out.
If have a look at portland, you will not need to find any one else.

But believe me, if that was the case or the entire story, then they would be the only company in business right now.

smidwap : see them to believe
ForumsAddict 08-19-2002, 07:14 PM Try hosting at http://www.portland.co.uk
Whats their profit then...
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:18 PM I think I will try them out. However, as ForumsAddict said, what can their profit possibly be? Maybe they get money from other source (services).
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:23 PM Well no wonder - their free plan gives you 15 MB of space and 100 MB of bandwith. Have fun loading some php scripts that use a lot of MySQL queries.
Vinayak_Sharma 08-19-2002, 07:23 PM We are not concerned with there profit, that is there problem.
Just grab what you are getting for free.
I have not seen a better hosting offer then them.
Portland is really great.

Nope. Just plain old 'nope'. You are DEFINATELY connected to their profit. If you love their services so much then one day they go bankrupt and can't handle their services anymore, what are you going to do?

can you dare to provide some thing similar.
Then do inform all members here.
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:27 PM What do I care if I can provide that? In my opinion, free hosting can easily give you just a worse reputation (considering a few other things). Not to mention, that free hosting plan is good for a small site who won't be getting more than 1,000 hits a month (do correct me if I am wrong).
ForumsAddict 08-19-2002, 07:28 PM I have not seen a better hosting offer then them.
Portland is really great.
Grab your free lunch and have it....:D
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:28 PM Then once you found out it had food poisoning in it, it'll be too late. ;)

Even big companies go bankrupt, what do you do then, and moreover you are getting it for free here, so you have nothing to lose, plus how can some one make profit out of free offerings, I was trying to help scottmberry
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:31 PM Well, I was stating that because you explicitly mentioned you wanted php and MySQL. If you have a MySQL database that has important information in it, you could easily loose it. Well, that is just a risk you take when going with a free host.

Well scottmberry wanted free resources, hence I mentioned it, of course it is upto the user to decide where to compromise. Every one here is asking for free, cheap and similar offers.
So the user know the best about his needs.

Agreed!

smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:38 PM Poo...just go out and try the free host. :D
Not sure where I was getting at when I was saying don't try a 'free' host.

smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:42 PM Sometimes a doctor is too far away, and you are left to dry! (Okay, the analogies are starting to drift away from topic a bit ;) ).

You are right for serious hosting free hosts should not be used, but there are Newbies, who are trying to sharpen there skills, or to test there work, fo rthem free is good.
I think you are an experienced one, so should not discourage juniors.
smidwap 08-19-2002, 07:54 PM Well said -
It is just I would never use a free host for anything except storing a couple personal images or just for a personal web site. Nothing more.

Hey you don't need a host, u got your own company.
ForumsAddict 08-19-2002, 08:06 PM Well said both of you...
Now let the users decide whats best for them whether free or paid....
Personally there is nothing wrong with free stuff if your site is not mission critical.
ginagamo 08-19-2002, 09:01 PM I remember digitalrice (http://www.digitalrice.com/services/) from a while back as being one of the best free hosts. You might want to check them out.
You may try asking for hosting at various directories:
Today's Domains Online (http://www.todaysdomainsonline.com)
Pick Me (http://www.pick-me.net) but these sites are geared towards the teen crowd.

this was a good one.
Gamer12 08-21-2002, 08:06 PM I want a couple free hosts, are there any others?
Tazzman 08-21-2002, 08:57 PM I thought digitalrice had closed signups for their free hosting.
Anyway, for a free domain name I would suggest going to www.uni.cc to get your very own yoursite.uni.cc and access to the nameservers for that domain, all totally free.
As for the hosting...
Gamer12 08-21-2002, 09:33 PM don't want domain!
