I have a simple question. While I am at my office, they won't allow us to do simple things because of a firewall. However, I can use VPN or Windows Remote Desktop to connect to a machine at my house.

I used an old laptop that I dropped and the screen cracked, but it has since died.

I am sort of looking for an old used desktop, to throw up and continue to do this, but, I'm not sure 300$ is worth it.

Is there a hosting service, that will do Windows based hosting, to grant me access to remote desktop to the account.

Before anyone says it, I know that there will be problems doing some things, which is completely fine.. because I use it for simple things, chat applications, and web based email.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You can do that with a Windows VPS for example. You can get a windows VPS for about 20/30 USD month that allows remote desktop.

What I am hearing you say is that from your office you want to access this low cost PC at your home.

You could do this with services such as GoToMyPC, WebEX for under $10 per month service fee or other services such as MyIVO.com for free. These services use port 80 - html to access the PC which would have a client running in the background.

If I understand you correctly - unless you have other needs for a hosting service a VPS would very much be overkill.

Could you not just have a dedicated ip and remote desktop setup? that way you could have it running for the price of a ip, if you cannot do this then i would reccomend gotomypc you can send documents to be printed remotely and all sorts also there is a 30 day free trial.

Check out logmein.com. Its web based software for remote access and completely free. also another free options would be to use a free dynamic dns service and just use rdp to connect to your home computer.

Thank you guys for all of your help.

Just to explain further, the computer that I did VNC from work to home using, is dead. I'm not wanting to replace it. I'm looking for a webhost, like the one guy said, a windows vps, so I don't have to buy a new computer to put at home to replace the laptop that is now dead.

So now that someone has offered a windows vps, it needs to allow remote desktop connection. Anyone here know a host, that does the 'windows vps' and allows remote desktop connection?

Thanks again

Apparently that's not always true. So, if anyone knows a windows vps host that allows RD, please let me know

Most of these Windows VPses are Windows webserver, which is "OK" for what you want, but I would suggest maybe getting a windows XP vps, some options include having Microsoft office (which can make it more expensive), (just use the google docs imo). Also do your research on Xen and Virtuozzo, I personally like Xen more, but thats my personal preference, just make sure what your options are.

This has nothing to do with remote desktop, BUT it can do chat applications, and web based email. They are called portable apps, and can be installed onto a flash drive which enables a user to use chat clients such as MSN and AIM directly from the drive without installing on the computer's HD. With this you will be able to bypass your firewall at work.

Here's one for LogMeIn.also...they try to upsell you all the time, but the basic remote control, very similar to GoToMyPC, is always free.
The price sure can't be beat ;)

I've been using LogMeIn (free) for about 2 years now and it has been working flawlessly. There is some functions that are better in the pro versions, but the free version works just fine for me. Here is some more information on the free version https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/default.asp
