View Full Version : Serverbeach's Network
JMulder 08-19-2002, 10:54 AM I've been a customer of Serverbeach for over a month now and am quite satisfied with the server. Of course, my administrator uninstalled/installed everything the second he got access to it ;)
The only thing that bothers me are the download speeds my visitors get. According to Apache's Server-Status it is only outputting around 80kB/s, I'd say this is quite low for a hosting company on DS3 and OC3.
Has anyone else experienced low speeds on Serverbeach?
Thanks in advance,
seg fault 08-19-2002, 10:57 AM Overall mine is relatively fast
But I have noticed some spikes, but nothing which would worry me.
Their abuse staff are really uneducated tho :(
JMulder 08-19-2002, 10:59 AM I am really beginning to wonder if my system administrator made a mistake (which I highly doubt since he does this for a living at IBM) .. but two days ago in the afternoon the server was getting hit quite hard, handling around 200 requests at the same time. If you wanted to download you'd get 2kB/s on ADSL 512/128
seg fault 08-19-2002, 11:03 AM Denial of service attack perhaps ;)
JMulder 08-19-2002, 11:05 AM *heart attack*
Nah ;)
seg fault 08-19-2002, 11:15 AM Give me a url to d/l from, we'll check the speeds between our boxes
JMulder 08-19-2002, 11:19 AM *picks one file*
http://files.mm2c.com/www.mm2c.com/cars/02pathfinder.zip
At the moment it should be good enough:
28 requests currently being processed, 13 idle servers
seg fault 08-19-2002, 11:28 AM My box is almost idle - your NIC/Port is fubared
check this out:
10:31:53 (66.02 KB/s) - `02pathfinder.zip' saved [1705676/1705676]
painfully slow :(
JMulder 08-19-2002, 11:31 AM :bawling:
Well, time to give my system administrator another call.
netdude 08-19-2002, 12:08 PM ~80KB/sec from west coast... kinda poor for what i see from even rackshack... (not that rackshacks bad, only use 'em as an example cuz they are in the same state)
funny problem i've had happen 2 me twice b4:
ethernet card at half-duplex, switch port at full-duplex or vice versa...
causes similar results... ping times will b totally fine, but actual transfers will suck... heh...
seg fault 08-19-2002, 12:46 PM Yeah, type ifconfig and paste the result :)
JMulder 08-19-2002, 12:57 PM Uhm, talking to me?
EDIT - IFCONFIG PASTE
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:70:31:1D:31

seg fault 08-19-2002, 03:21 PM I would get serverbeach to look into it. I dont think it is software related.
JMulder 08-19-2002, 03:23 PM Neither do I actually .. already emailed them through the customservice address :o
seg fault 08-19-2002, 03:24 PM They aren't TOO bad with hardware issues
I had a faulty hard disk replaced in about 8 hours (outside of normal business hours)
seg fault 08-19-2002, 03:26 PM I would definantly say bad uplink or NIC - just try to be as concise as possible with your request, give as much detail as possible and you should be fine.
They are quite professional in that respect. :)
JMulder 08-19-2002, 03:28 PM Yeah I think I read that, did a search on SB and read almost everything on it :)
They're cool so far, bit slow but what can you expect with a company of erm 3 (?) months old?
JMulder 08-19-2002, 03:31 PM I'll submit a ticket tomorrow morning and try to be as precise as possible. I'll keep you updated :)
EDIT: Submitted 5 secs ago ;)
JMulder 09-03-2002, 10:48 AM Perhaps old news to you all but in some magic way the speeds have been fixed. No NIC replacement, no recofinguration of the server.. just BANG and it's fast again. Now I need to make sure I don't pass 400GB / month :o
Done 55GB in a bit less than 5 days.

I am getting a pretty decent speed compared to hosts in my own country. So you connection to Europe (also considering the fact I have a slow connection and it is prime time on the internet here) is good!

Thats an absurd amount of collisions you've got there :eek2:

I just got 528kb/sec from my cable modem at home.
JMulder 09-04-2002, 09:39 AM Excellent to hear the download speeds are nice again :)
528kB/s ? Lucky you ;)
ranchoweb 09-06-2002, 03:31 AM so I ordered a server from Server Beach yesterday, today they sent me my welcome email and the server is unreachable. Anyone else have problems like this? I filed a trouble ticket on it and according to their Service Agreement: http://www.serverbeach.com/sla.php I should have a full refund on the thing within 10 hours.
JMulder 09-06-2002, 08:41 AM ranchoweb - The time I got access to the server it was all working fine. Tried pinging the IP yet?
bjseiler 09-06-2002, 09:12 AM I had a server with serverbeach for a month. The signup was quick and painless, my server was up 100% for the whole month, and the ping times were always good. BUT, over the course of a month, I emailed them 3 questions and NEVER got one response. Even though I never had any problems with the server, I cancelled my account because of fears that when I eventually did have problems I would just be f()*&'d
ranchoweb 09-06-2002, 11:53 AM JMulder, yes I pinged, I tracerouted, it appears my machine is just not accessible. Haven't heard back from them yet... too bad.
freakysid 09-06-2002, 01:19 PM I got around 30KB/s on that dl through my ADSL (capped at 512kb/s) in AU. So that is not fast, but not slow either. I also dl to a server in NJ US and that dl was about 600KB/s so that's OK too.
I tracerouted to your domain name from AU and from NJ US and both traceroutes were pretty good.
JMulder 09-06-2002, 01:22 PM Hey freakysid (JMulder from SPF) ;)
30kB/s? :o Odd but at least it isn't as slow as it used to be on peak times.
freakysid 09-06-2002, 01:33 PM Yeah Jeroen, I know who you are ;) What a geek site you have going there :D
JMulder 09-06-2002, 01:50 PM Geek site? LOL .. why's that? ;)
