NetXL 08-19-2002, 07:47 AM I agree, I love checking out data center facilities!
They're always so perfect-looking.
Domenico 08-19-2002, 07:48 AM I really think you are unique and you should be taken away from home and be put in a curiosity museum.
:D
btw. maybe one day magazines will come out with names like playnoc and pentnoc and surely those good interviews will be there too...

I should send you some pictures of some of the centers I've seen. Far from perfect. :(
On the other hand, there were others that made me go  and want to move in and never leave. :D

I hear SAH have a pretty crappy facility. ;)
I'm sure there are bad ones, but the mainstream facilities I usually look at are quite nice.
SoftWareRevue 08-19-2002, 08:57 AM We will be posting pictures of our three centers soon. ;)
They are so cool.
From the dual 56k feeds; to the fact that two of them have doors.
Aplusmedia 08-19-2002, 10:08 AM I think they are cool. but hell no I wouldnt spend all day looking at it.:stickout
dynamitehost 08-19-2002, 10:29 AM One word.... why??????
Acronym BOY 08-19-2002, 11:32 AM geek porn!
I like looking, but I'm not obsessed.
It reminds of me of back in '94 when I went with my Dad to visit our ISP, which was run out of the guys garage. And, he let me use his Sun Sparc 20 to surf the web. Even though it was only a T1, it was fast.
Yeah I remember going to my friends house who had ISDN (DEDICATED) hohoho. Then I think even farther back and fearing that my ISP had a 56K dedicated connection to the internet.. Where have those days gone ? :)
WebmastTroy 08-19-2002, 01:07 PM I'm not obsessed or anything....its just that I think they are cool looking with the cabinets and the way they are designed.

Racks? Yeah, i could look at them all day too.
artisan 08-19-2002, 03:10 PM You need to get out more. Computers age too quickly...in 6 months when you see it again it'll be outdated and worthless. Go and check out a World Wonder. Much more rewarding :) As a bonus, you might meet a woman with a rack that you don't have to plug in. Maybe you'll get turned on instead of the computer :)
(Stop me now, please)

jhcashman 08-19-2002, 04:50 PM I can tell some people are still virgins :stickout

 I don't like being in datacenter! ... got a number of scars & bruises from datacenters  I'm sure many in WHT experienced the same thing too
The only time I'd camp in datacenter is when doing network troubleshooting, when everybody panic and screaming, phones continuously ringing (cell phones not allowed), people busy activating their backups or in larger scale, disaster recovery plan. They then will contact each of their counterpart in different part of the country/region to "swing" their production network to the other side etc, I can see managers nervously busy preparing damage control and politically correct statements, etc.
and the word "datacenter: reminds me of:
- heaps (and sometimes messy beyond belief) of network cables underneath the raised floor
- it's cold in there!
- monotonously noisy (come from lots of server/router fans or power backup system or temperature control system, humming monotonously)
- Lots of LEDs (when you switched off all the lights, sometimes it makes nice scenery though - as if you're surrounded by green/orange tiny tiny small little stars)
- security systems (lots of sign-in, password to punch in, card to be flashed, retina/finger print to be scanned etc)
- rows and rows of servers, cisco routers/switches, multiplexers, modems, fiber distribution frame/patch panels, PBXes/DMSes, DWDMs, etc
BUT, when you manage to fixed the network and the havoc finally over, you'd walk out from datacenter with a feeling which hard to describe, as if you just saved the world! :D
citrus 08-26-2002, 05:05 PM I too am a sucker for data center pics...

Check 'em out: http://communitech.net/corporate/tour/cameras/camera.ctx Heh... I do just the same. I used to do business with them so here and there I look over their website just to see what's up. And if you spend alot of time watching their live cameras, you might be lucky enough to have witnessed some interesting things the staff do. :cartman:
Aussie Bob 08-26-2002, 09:06 PM Someone should arrange "datacenter tours" or a "datacentere crawl". :D
