So how do you like fastservers.net?

1. What is there Managed Services like?

2. How is there support? (avg time support responses)

3. Any serious downtimes they have?

4. A score out of 10.

Vinh,
Thanks i appreciate it.

1. Not sure, haven't really asked them to do much ;)

2. Excellent. Responses within an hour via their ticket system, plus they have a phone number.

3. None so far, but then we've only been using them for 15 days.

4. 10. Both servers that we have with them were set up ahead of schedule, and they've been courteous, helpful and professional through all contact with them. Goodbye Nocster ;)

Have had a server for a month now. They were very helpful during the server setup, I have not used the support yet so I cant say anything about that. The major experience is that the network connectivity to Europe has been much better than my experience with Burst. I have not experienced any serious packet loss during this period (except for the major network problems that occured during a day some time ago). I have servers with Rackspace as well and the network connectivity is almost as good as Rackspace.

1) As good as anything out there.
2) 5 min to 18 hours. But never unanswered.
3) Nope.
4) 8-10

One unfortunate thing I've seen on these forums is how quickly people pass judgment on a hosting company based on so little time passed. I can remember at least a dozen companies praised to death here only with completely disastrous outcome.

This is not directed at Fastservers particularly, but I need a lot more time before I feel comfortable signing up with them. Honestly my gut feeling is still dubious with them and their service (don't ask me specifically, it's a feeling based on my limited communication w/ their sales dept). A good company is one that offers great service for a sustained amount of time, not a moment in time.

The "sustained amount of time" and/or eternity is something that we are definitely striving for. However, if you see our sales department ducking in and out from time to time it is only because we are attempting to keep a stable handle on things, while maintaining optimal support response time and quality....

it's a difficult balance.
We will keep communicating as best we can as we grow; as quickly and as sanely as we possibly can.

It's tough- hopefully we'll make it!
If not, at the very least we can say we gave it our best shot.
:D

I've been using them for less than a month, but so far no problems. Based on my experience, I'd give them a 9 or 10.

easybyte: We're just telling him our experiences so far, not the company's whole history ;)

I understand that, and my comment wasn't directed at either FS nor the posters to this thread. It's more of a heads up to everyone reading in general, not to be misled, for lack of better word, into anything before taking their time and examining a company over a length of time. Just a lesson I've learned.

You're quite right easybyte - I guess in this particular case you could look at the performance of their parent company Powersurge as some kind of indicator of the potential for Fastservers, but as you say, only time will truly tell :)

Certainly on their efforts so far, they seem to be doing OK.

1. Pretty good... the server was crashing and they emailed me soon thereafter and asked if I was running any CGI programs that might cause that (I was). They charge $15 every time you add new IP addresses (I think up to 10) to their DNS server. I didn't have time to figure out how to run my own DNS server. I needed to get going ASAP.

2. Pretty good.. Very quick responses. I chatted a bit (using the wall command on the new server!) w/ the admin immediately after they setup the server... got almost all my urgent questions answered.

3. Yes. Most of a day... their bandwidth line was cut or something like that. It was posted here... didn't appear to be their fault.

4. 8. They threw in an extra hard drive, so it has 120 Gigs (which is great!)

Understood. As no1v2 said, we're not really passing judgement on a hosting company. We're simply posting how fastservers.net has treated us thus far -- the original question posed was "how do you like fastservers.net" -- and, well, I like them a lot :)

If, at any point, fastservers' service starts to faulter -- I won't hesitate to share the bad experiences on this board as well.

I'm thinking of collocatiing my servers with Fastservers - a 1/2 cab to start - and I have a stupid question - Where the heck is their datacenter located? :) I can't find it anywhere on their site, and traceroutes to their switches don't tell much.

I would guess they are in California around San Jose from the traces but I can't tell for sure. Anyway, where would my servers be located? And do that have more than one location?

Thanks:)

Their DC is in California, they use the Hurricane Electric facility in Fremont I believe :)

See www.he.net for info.

Got it, thanks!

Do they offer flat-rate bandwidth pricing? Say a flat rate for a 2mb capped connection, rather than charging by the gig? Does any decent colo provider offer this?

I always thought it they used HE's San Jose DC...I don't think I ever got that confirmed by them though. Maybe we're both right, and they have some servers in each :)

Btw, and I've said this before, their speed is amazing. I host Half-Life servers on my Fastservers.net box, for which speed is very important. It's rare for a broadband west coast player to have a ping as high as 40 - in game! (Pings reported in game in Half-Life servers are always higher than what ping utilities report.)

Edit: ixian, just call or e-mail them.

I did:) Waiting, but I'm eager to hear from end-users too:)

YOU, in fact, are the guy I want to talk to, because I will be hosting a couple CS servers myself. 1) Pings are that good? I can't wait. 2) How do they charge you? In my experience, companies that charge by the gig will eat you alive in costs when running a game servers. Good game servers ALWAYS have steady traffic, so there's no 95% advantage. I'd much prefer to have, say, a capped 3mb connection, then a burstable one where I pay extra for extra gigs transferred. Do they do that?

Yeah, I'm not actually 100% sure myself :)

Absolutely everything, Fastservers wise, is congregated in the brand spankin' new facility in Fremont, which is a gigabit-ethernet teleportation away from HE's core connection in the same building as MAE West in downtown San Jose.

That Fremont location is top o' the line, prime time colocation real estate in a variety of ways. We're very lucky to be there!

Hi,
When do you expect to be taking new orders for win2k servers?

Robbie

Here's an email from them:

Mr. Turbeville:

We currently do not have the ability to do capped bandwidth, but using the CPANEL software combined with the ability to see your realtime MRTG stats should keep you pretty safe. Since each server comes with 300GB of transfer you can within CPANEL software be able to limit the amount of transfer on a per site basis. Depending on the number of sites you have this could be generously divided up and keep you within safe limits of ever going over.

If you have any further questions please let us know.

Regards,
FastServers.Net Sales Team

I would still recommend them. Everyone seems to be happy and there are lots of employees that are there to help you!
