I just bought a webhosting business that currently uses a shared reseller account. I would like to move to a managed VPS.

1)Is there any benefit to me and my clients in doing this or should i just get a bigger shared package.

2) any recommendation in the 0-$80/month i am currently leaning towards wired tree as their support seems excellent.

any thoughts please.
Thanks
kigo

I don't recommend a VPS. Because they generally provide limited Ram. You maybe find one that provide more. But then the price will be expensive. If you sell web hosting when I recommend a reseller hosting or managed dedicated server. For example we have hundred and hundred customers and have five reseller accounts on Hostdime and Surpasshosting. Their service is great.

Whats the sort of space and bandwith requirments for your clients ? . I have delt with something similar to this before in the past . Depending on the traffic on the sites you may not need to move to a VPS or dedicated yet , a better non oversold reseller account will probably suit you.

VPS is root access is everything dedicated. And you alone. You will need to provide support for your customers. If you feel you can - go with VPS - you save some money. If you do not want to support customers yourself - ressel account is for you. I beleive that any web hosting company woul love to help you with migration.

I'd go with dhcart's advice, provided you go with an experienced company that has a good track record.

Whats the reason for you wanting to migrate? Is your current system causing problems - if so, i'd probably go for a reseller system first. Ask your current host about their own migration options (shared -> reseller -> vps -> dedicated).

A lot of the time a customer can move to another provider, not even realising that their current provider may give that service.

1)Firstly company that provides the reseller account has an email only support system which i am a bit wary of. I think any legitimate company should have a telephone number.
2)I have big plans and thus want to get together a system that should take care of us for a while.

I think any legitimate company should have a telephone number.I agree on principle, only that I don't think it has to be used for support purposes. It may be for used for sales/business, and doesn't have to be manned 24/7. That is if we're defining "legitimate", you're certainly free to use other criteria when it comes to hosts you're willing to use. :)
