View Full Version : AdCycle, FTP, and FrontPage Extensions.

I'd like to install AdCycle software on my
website at

http://www.AquariumFish.net

which is hosted by Tera-Byte on a RaQ4 shared
server on Tera-Byte's plan #6. Some of the
details about that plan are at

http://tera-byte.com/hosting-web.html

which includes FrontPage extensions, MySQL,
PHP, CGI, etc.

AdCycle has three versions. I plan to start
with the simplest, #1. Details about these
three versions, and the AdCycle installation
instructions are at

http://www.adcycle.com/install.html#config

Now my question. The installation of AdCycle
uses FTP, which I understand is "incompatible"
with FrontPage extensions, which my web site
uses.

How do I install AdCycle?

That's a good question. I've heard that FTPing into the dir. could corrupt the FP extensions. I wonder if you did all of it via telnet if this same problem happens? I don't know, but maybe someone else knows if you can do it this way.

I'd *think* that creating directories and moving files wouldn't affect the extensions, but I really don't know.

Would the FTP problem affect anything is you used Telnet's FTP?

Maybe you could put the Adcycle software on some other server and use the "mget" command to transfer it to your Raq.

Then you can install it all using regular telnet commands.

Create a user and use that user login to store the ftp files. The access the stuff http://www.domain.com/~user

-and that's why they pay WreckRman2 the big bucks... good idea.

Got AdCycle installed via FTP with two new fol-
ders named "adcycle" and "adimages" in the root
directory.

Web site seemed to function properly after
installation.

After a day or two I edited the web site on
my machine to add fresh content, then tried
to upload the revised version to my host using
the "Publish Web" operation from within
FrontPage and got the following error message:

"Error Message

Server Error: Can not change permissions on
file:

/home/sites/site138/web/adimages/index.html"

I get the same error message, if I try to
edit either folder in any way from within
FrontPage.

I'm told both folders have permissions set
to 777 now, but should be 755 for "adcycle"
and 644 for "adimages".

My goal is to install adcycle and have the
operations within FrontPage work properly.

I don't use Frontpage, not really know anyone that does, so this is a guess. Can't you exclude directories from Frontpage so it doesn't try to access them? It looks to me like it's trying to play with stuff it shouldn't, as the adcycle dir isn't a part of your Frontpage site. (not in this sense anyway).

Maybe?

Hello Greg,

Thanks for your comments.

I think you're right. I know I can
use FrontPage to create a subweb
within my web site.

Then, when I re-publish my web site
to my host using FrontPage, the
"Publish Web" operation will ask
me if I want to re-publish the sub-
web too.

I suppost I could enter "no" and,
as you suggest, "not play" with the
AdCycle stuff that's in the sub
web.

Couldn't get FrontPage and FTP to
work on the same domain. So the
next idea is to put AdCycle on a
different domain without any
FrontPage on that domain.

I've heard of the idea of having a
subdomain. Something like

ads.aquariumfish.net

does a subdomain differ functional-
ly from a completely new domain?

Tom: You can get FTP and FrontPage to work in the same domain if you're careful. What you need to do is contact your hosting service and have them change the ownerships of the files to "nobody" (setting the permissions won't do it, you need to change the ownerships). When you upload files via FTP, the ownerships get set to the user name you used to log on via FTP, and FrontPage will give the error.

FYI, a subdomain acts like an entirely new hosting account, with separate user names and settings. So www.yoursite.com might have the FrontPage extensions, and other.yoursite.com might not have the FrontPage extensions.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your comments.

Which way would you go? Try to get
FrontPage and FTP to work in the
same domain, or have them on separ-
ate domains?

I will need to regularly upload
changes to my website via FrontPage's
"Publish Web" operation.

I think I may also need to make
regular changes to the files that
have been uploaded via FTP.

Would it be more reliable and less
troublesome to have two domains?
One for the FrontPage stuff and the
other for the FTP stuff?

The cost of the second domain is only
about $99.00/year.

Thanks again for your helpful com-
ments.

Assuming your hosting provider will cooperate and change the file ownerships for you, I would just stick with the single domain and save the money. I have several virtual sites with the FrontPage extensions along with FTP'd CGI files, and they're running very happily.

Did you read the post by WreckRman2? I believe that option would work just as well as having a second domain. You can have the FrontPage extensions on the primary domain, and a user domain without the extensions (setting up a sub domain is the same as adding a user in your control panel--make sure you leave the FrontPage User Web unchecked).

Nice website by the way; I have a little tank in my office full of Neon Tetras and Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami (along with a plecostomus catfish who's almost too big for the tank).
