I was cutting it pretty close on renewing my domain registration (just a single, personal domain). Im pretty sure I used tucows last time and was sold(?) to register.com during my term. Initially they wanted $35 a year to renew. I was going to go with NameCheap.com but I needed my auth code. Register.com makes you call them for the auth code (kinda ticked me off)...
Long story short they asked what it would take to get me to stay, and I said registration for maximum term (9years) with whois privacy for $8 a year or less. They came back at $7.95 a year ($71.55 out the door) so I bit. Not sure if I did the right thing, but I haven't had a problem with them and I didnt have to change registrars. Anyway, your mileage may vary, but I wanted to post saying that they are atleast willing to go that low.
