View Full Version : Donhost - disappearing files?

Has anyone else experienced files and directories just disappearing from their Donhost account for no reason? I have a client who runs a photo library and puts his own landscape pics up, so no probs with copyright and ownership there. Obviously he has 'unlimited space (currently using just 32 Megabytes) and I have never exceeded the new 20 Gigabyte data transfer across all my accounts. The first time it happened I thought it might have been his fault (although it did coincide with a control panel upgrade), but I did it myself this time and overnight 650 Mb has gone.

Whole directories have just vanished, together with days of uploading. Other than this I have been happy with Donhost (who deny any part/knowledge), but this is very worrying...

Many people haven't been so happy with Donhost, do a search of the forums to see an 'ample' number of complaints.

extract of an e-mail I sent to DonHost' Mr John Bush on March 20 last:

"Dear John,
...
Again, this account consisted in an html index linking album photos. Therefore, all files accessible via hyperlink. DonHost has act against his own rules and has damaged our reputation. No excuse from your side. Your action has been unacceptable and your lack of prior announcement extremely unpolite. You
are simply not granting what you offer in your web page."
...

They simply delete an account when they "decide" much resources are being used. They deleted me three sites with no prior advice. I lost two customers. Probably if it not was because of my limited knowledge of the English language my answer would be more agressive !!

I decided to change and searched in this forum who was who. My choice was SplashHost (www.splashhost.com) and I am extremely happy with them.

Good luck !
Pere

Mellowman, Donhost has recently been discussed in detail here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58137 and here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35813 and as suggested, do a search on them in this forum.

Hopefully you had a back up of the files you uploaded, but thats no excuse for simply deleting them from your account.

Hi!
Some days ago the mainboard of their server 4 has gone.
They just restored a backup of the previous night on a new server. They sent an e-mail in order to notice this, you should have received it.
Check your e-mail address in your control panel if you haven't received it.
This could be the reason why you lost your files.

Bye!

Thanks Shazan for the info of the server 4 thing.

Some quotes:

Are these also related to the Server 4 thing?

Well the two previous disappearances certainly coincide with a control panel upgrade or the server switch to Doncaster, but not the main board failure.

And of course I've got everything backed up * BUT* the disappearing files relate to a directory of a photo library of approximately 2.5Gb - can you imagine uploading this again for the second time in a few weeks.......even on my broadband connection :-((

And before anyone asks, I only upload a few images each week! I've certainly never got close to any data transfer/bandwidth limits

I think my only answer is to send the files on CD and get my web host provider to upload them.
