View Full Version : Salute to the Women of Hosting

In this mostly male-run business, I just want to salute the knowledgeable and fine women who run reputable hosting companies. Has anyone else noticed that 2 of the best hosting companies are run by women? (just some trivia)

Hosting Matters - Annette
FutureQuest - Deb

Any other reputable hosting companies run by females?

No problemo.

But being serious now, there's a few girls at sdcolo that are nice. They don't run the show or anything, but they run something. : )

I don't buy the whole - "it's a man's world" line. I see no reason why women can't run hosting businesses. I'd bet they'd do a better job than most blokes.

Hey, let's try to stay on-topic shall we. I was talking about hosting companies run by women, in other words, the top person is a woman. Not talking about which is better, or how many of you men really let your wives run the business but act like you run it. :)

Not talking about which is better, or how many of you men really let your wives run the business but act like you run it. ROFL!!! I guess that's one way of putting it :stickout

I guess I'm a bit old fashioned being someone that still believes in the idea that the man is the head of the household (though I also believe the women is the neck... we all know the head doesn't do very well w/o a neck to hold it up and point it in the right direction ;) )

Thanks for the kudos ;) ... and yes, my dear hubby runs this company right along with me and has worked just as hard every step of the way. I doubt either of us could have made it happen without the other as we both have opposite skills. Today we have an entire team keeping things going :)

I do believe there are still more male business owners than females and certainly more male techs than females but I don't think that has as much to do with capabilities etc as it does with time (There is also the issue of interest. There's probably a statistic somewhere that notes men are more inclined to enjoy this type work than women would be...). Women are still making their place in the workforce and it's just going to take time to get everything evened out. The bra burning days, though before I was born, weren't that long ago in reality....

After slavery was abolished, it still took time for blacks to have the opportunity to receive a decent education and to be accepted in society. The affects of that are still very much seen today and it is what has kept their numbers lower in the "business owner" category as well. It's going to take a long time for both women and minorities (often shown in the same category) to firmly plant themselves into our current day 'equal society'. I think we'll see a lot more of both in the generations to come and are already seeing a great deal of growth in the area. Ack! I'm totally off topic now .... with that I'll hush ;)

In some ways I wish my wife was involved. But she's into the "Mother with 4.8 children" thing. She used to be a secretary for some big wigs at the Commonwealth Bank [before marrying me] and boy, can the lady type!! She also makes a pretty mean cup of coffee too. :D

Companies, in no particular order, for some of the members of the list above:

HostCaters, Media Designs, PMA Hosting, Pagiweb, Graphiti Design, AlternateDSigns, LovelyDTP, WonderSpace, Extreme Presence, Terraweb Solutions, Metallic, Netdogger, NXLSys, Blogomania, ADC Group, RogueBytes, Kyburz, BlueDiamonde, EdificationWeb, WordMuseum, Mainline, ArtBanshee, Mainstay, Renaissance, Fishpie Web, etc.

Not all of them well known, but there are more than some people think. :)

ok :D at the risk of incurring the scorns from chrisb for deviating this thread ever so slightly ;) I'll say that as the kids get older, they get easier to manage. When they get around the 5+ age, they tend to look after themselves and get out from under your feet. My wife was away on one of those "Women's retreat" weekends and I had all 4 kids. They were a breeze.

Keep breeding rockergrrl and keep building your hosting business. :agree: :D

Do I smell a Women of Hosting theme for a future issue of Playboy?

Pics with Avatar faces ;-)

Seriously, Annette and Stephanie rock. I haven't had a chance to work with any others on the list.

I was shocked by the number of women who run hosting companies. Shocked because the IT world on a whole doesn't have to many women.

TheGAME1264
08-19-2002, 01:51 AM
I am also surprised by the number of women involved in the hosting industry, from the standpoint of a designer/developer. All of my clients are businesses run by, and primarily staffed by, males for whatever reason (perhaps Deb is right as far as the issue of equality goes, or maybe it's something else, I don't know). Any female employees of the companies seem to want to fill out administrative and/or clerical roles and don't want to take on a role in the design, development, or promotion of the sites; they almost seem to be afraid of the Internet in general as well.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say in a backhanded way is congratulations and keep up the good work to those of you of the fairer sex who do own, co-own, and/or take on an active role in the hosting business. I hope to see a lot more of you soon, contributing knowledge, ideas, and expertise.

As far as the Women of Hosting theme for Playboy goes, I don't think it'd work very well. The minute the women were asked to show their racks, they'd bring in pictures of their datacenters. :)

Oh, ChrisB, get a sense of humor. It's called topical humor. There was even a ;-)

The glass ceiling for women exists in the IT industry and it's a shame. There have been a few women who have broken it, Meg Whitman of eBay and Carly Fiorina of HP, but they are few and far between.

It's heartening to see the sheer number of women running web hosting companies.

I know of another company that is run by a woman, but the sales and marketing sections are run by the men. In this case, The men have better sales qualities and the woman has better management qualities. So to view the company from the outside, the men are prominent and the woman is behind the scenes.

I wonder if this is common.
