mjfroggy 08-17-2002, 09:01 PM Hello,
Is their any large scale hosting companies that are based in NY perferable Long island (south east NY)
I am looking for a host that has been around for a good few years and has a good rep as well as decent prices for co-loc a machine with them.
I am just looking for comments NOT PERSONAL OFFERS regarding companies if any know of any in the above stated location
Thank you
Andrew 08-17-2002, 09:18 PM There's lightning.net in Minneola. (nothing to do with my company besides a similar name :)) All I know about them is they're using HE and appear to be fairly reliable.
jayjay 08-17-2002, 10:16 PM cloud9 dot net is in White Plains, NY
likewhoa dot com (spam kings! porn kings too, so they'll be there for awhile. they also say they have a few providers that they don't.. but I know some people with them and they have nothing to say but good, so just shake the truth out of them.) are in NYC somewhere.
There's a bunch of places in the heart of NYC, but be prepared to pay for being located there.
Andrew 08-17-2002, 11:26 PM Yeah, Likewhoa is in Brooklyn. I know a guy who works for them. I've heard good things. Frankly (I'm not usually one to comment on these things, BUT...) at the prices they charge they damn well better be good!
chrisb 08-18-2002, 01:36 AM I wouldn't trust a damn Yankee as far as I could throw them. :) Try a Southern hosting company... they're the best!

You don't respond to emails anyways :P
mjfroggy 08-18-2002, 10:24 AM Thanks all,
for the comments and company names well I already new of three of them. One being WAY OUT of my price range to spend and another being a company I would rather GO OUT OF BUSSINESS and DIE then associate with.
But if they are any other companies anyone could suggest please let me know.
Thanks All

LOL WOW!
Please share. I'm always looking for decent providers in this area.
ruler 08-19-2002, 11:20 AM Isn't simplecp.com hosted with RackVillage? I thought Dan was bragging to me once, but I could be wrong.
Nope. We have our servers and connections in Hackensack NJ at the IDT building, Rackvillage is based out of the Newark NOC. We almost moved our hosting to their NOC but thank god we thought twice about moving our servers there!
PS - The actual server that I develop simplecp on is in my house
:-D The server that hosts the simplecp.com site is in Tyler Texas. We are in the process of moving those servers upto the Hackensack datacenter.
We have nothing to do with Dan and RackVillage and they never had anything to do with SimpleCP
Fine, I really didnt want to tell my story, but since I do not want to be associated with the RackVillage name, here goes...
We have our servers out of Tyler Texas, and for obvious reasons, we wanted our servers to be close by incase we needed to do work on them. We were looking for places close by and we knew the CEO of IDT so we were trying to hook up a deal with him. While that was happening I stumbled accross rackvillage who offered me a deal before IDT did. Basically we were promised a full rack and a whole class c ip range and we pay for our bandwidth. Naturally, we get the rack but no ips. Waiting for weeks to get the IP block they keep promising. (at this time we havent moved our hosting servers to it because we didnt have the IPs yet). One morning, their connection is shutdown for a day. Rackvillage claims they wired IDT $$ but IDT didnt know the name they sent it under, IDT claims they never paid. Fine, they were back up and meeting with the CEO monday. We get an email on Tues Aug 13th saying that they are moving all servers to a telehouse cogent line that same day (we didnt have any ips to change, but other customers would be down 24 hours to change name server ips...) - we asked them to leave the 2 servers we had already put on their connection (dedicated servers, not hosting servers) - they agreed. That wed and thurs we worked out a deal at IDT to get our own rack in the Hackensack NOC, and on friday we moved our servers to Hackensack.
PS. We got our whole IP block the same day IDT set us up.
PPS Dan and rackvillage never had anything to do with SimpleCP except me showing it to them and them wanting to market it (which i said no to)

good luck...the dude hasn't posted here since August...
hengod 10-17-2002, 01:49 PM I would like to recommend datapipe though if you are looking for a extremely stable host. They are on the New Jersey side of the border but imo that shouldn't matter much. I do not work for them but i do have 2 mail servers with them for about a year (long enough to render an opinion imo).
Speed: extremely good above 300kB/s all of the time even to users on the west coast
Reliability: Very good i would place it at about 3 nines it has gone out 2-3 times but came back relatively quickly.
Redundancy/Connection Diverseness: Excellent they actually seem to have BGP working unlike some of the other providers i have worked with and the routing seems to deal with poor routing on the client side well (an important issue for some of us) They are also peered with at least 3 major tier1s (including internap).
Service: The technical staff seems competant and fixes issues quickly 24/7/365.
Pricing: They are one of the most expensive internet hosts that said you can get a server for under $200 from them. For us what is most important is reliability rather than ability to pump a huge amount of transfer cheaply. The support is also something to consider especially if your clients are F500 and want problems solved quickly.
I also have had a server at lightning in the past and it was excellent as well but was not as diverse in connection type at the time (i have not used them since they were bought out). Hosting really depends on your needs for us having a host that did not have spam email porviders was essential due to problems with getting our server's ips blocked due to other email providers on the same network. One other note the service speed of datapipe has been faster than at our servers at ATT and MCI due somewhat to the telephone jungle to reach someone at both places.

Hurricane Electric owns Lightning.net and they are quite reliable.
