Hi. How do i give some small resellers that I have on my WHM server the chance to oversell their space/bandwidth. Currently say reseller 1 is allocated 2GB space and 20GB bandwidth and they wish to make 1GB space and 10GB bandwidth accounts, they can only make 2 of these no matter if the accounts only use even a fraction of these actual resources.

Thanks

You need to tell them to lower the limits they have allocated for the two accounts...If they accounts are using only a fraction of the 1GB space and 10GB bandwidth, then why give them such high limits. They should just give them maybe 100MB and 1GB, or something similar.

If they are selling the packages, and promising people 1GB and 10GB, then it is their own fault that they have run out of space.

Overselling disk space is a very dangerous practice.

Overselling within reason is not that dangerous in my opinion. I know there is a way to do this, that's how mchost and splashhost set up their accounts I think.

Thanks

Setting the dangers of overselling aside for a moment, why not set up additional plans with increased storage/bandwidth? The resellers can then choose plans that accommodate what they would like to offer. Why should you have to assume the risks - let them pay for what they want to resell!

If a company is making enough money that they could go and purchase an additional server about any time they needed to, I don't see the problem with overselling. Would anyone agree?

I know all about the cons and pros of overselling. I just want a simple question answered.

But does anyone know how this can be done? I know it can. currently I can't give the same options to people that companies such as mchost and splashhost give, I just wnat to know how to do it.

Thanks

Allocate more space and bandwidith to the resell account.

Hi again guys. I refer to this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=46465

Where voxtreme-matt said:

You can select to either use hard limits, or no limits. We selected no limits, giving resellers more freedom.

Any ideas?

Yes you just do not check any of the limit boxes on the reseller account.

So people here mention that one should not oversell?
Uhm, thats what one as a hosting provides lives on.
You bet your ass on that people wont use the resources
provided to them.

For example on one of our servers. We have sold about 200GB diskspace.. how much is used? perhaps 30-35GB!
What will we do if it proves to be a problem? just upgrade the disk.. no big deal.

I do not recommend over selling in a paid hosting enviroment although if you are large enough, it really should not matter and balance out.

I also run a free web hosting company, and with the amount of users I have, if each used all their space (20 megs), I would require 500 GB. Now I just checked how much they actually use, and its around 25 GB.

I have a few sites which fluctuate in traffic from month to month. They tend to balance themselves out, usually maintaining 20gigs of transfer. If I had a 20gig reseller plan, it would be an incredible pain to change the plan near the end of each month to keep all of the sites online :)

Reselling is ok as long as you arent actually SELLING (ie if it is for your own personal sites) :)
