I’m looking to buy some 1U/2U machines with P3/P4 processors and preferably an onboard IDE RAID like the Tyan S2505 board for example (or other IDE RAID that supports RAID level 1.

I bought my boxes I have now from QSOL (excellent sales and support) but I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper place?

Why don't you buy parts and put it together yourself? An excellent source of cheap parts (watch out for shipping charges) are on pricewatch.com

Compare yourself:
RMC-1K 1U case from ServerCase.com $100
Emacs power supply 1U 230 watts ATX power from ServerCase.com $60
Tyan Tiger ide motherboard (built in video and NICs) ~ $110
PC133 512MB Ram $50
Pentium 1.13GHz 133MHz bus, $115
40GB hdd ~$70
-------
total: $515
(add shipping charges and maybe tax if you are in the same state). Hopefully, I didn't miss something out, but you got my POINT :)

I think he'll need more juice than 230W...

cuz professional companies don't want to bother with technical support issues... if something goes wrong, they want someone to be clearly accountable...

i used to build my own servers... for the most part, they worked excellent... but when cooling/etc became an issue on a few of 'em... i hated the fact that i couldn't blame anybody but me... so i just bought a bunch of dell boxes... lol... cuz downtime hurts more than the increase in capital expenditures.

I've only had a look at a couple of companies in the USA for providing rack servers, but www.qsol.com look professional and are priced competitively.

Anyone else that's worth knowing about?

For IDE and PIII that power cooler will do good...
