I would like to hear some opinions on where to
buy a dedicated server.

Im currently concidering these options:
http://www.eservers.biz
http://www.fastservers.net
http://www.nocster.com
http://www.webreseller.net/
http://www.rackshack.net
http://www.myacen.com

I don't have huge knowledge about running a server,
so which do you think has the best support,
and would help me with even newbie problems.

I would also want good uptime.

Will be using the server to sell hosting.
(Cheap, so please don't mention rackspace.)

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

http://www.eservers.biz - cheap prices but not managed

http://www.fastservers.net - setup price isnt too bad, cheap ips @ 25cents and cheap cpanel license, managed (semi i think you call it)

http://www.nocster.com - 100% managed, they spread setup fee over 3 months if you ask i think, prices are at competition level.

http://rackshack.net - cheap price, from what i hear, no support really, just hardware and you, learn to talk to it.

Do I need to know much about linux and stuff before geting a dedicated server?

Or can I handle it with control panels.

And whats the great difference between managed
and unmanaged servers?

What would a managed server company do for me that a unmanaged wouldn't?

Just echo that, Rackshack offers a COMPLETE unmanaged service, just you and your box .. and a friendly support staff member with one word volcab which is "Restore" :cartman:

Rackshack.net completely unmanaged, but there is a helpful forum which will solve pretty much any problem you have. If you want a completely managed service, you may just be better going for a high end reseller package?

You forgot that RS techs also know the word "reboot" :D

I have a plain RedHat server with RS. I had no idea what I was doing, except for a few linux commands. From someone who thinks he knows what he is doing now, if you are patient and constantly ask for help at the RS forums, you'll be able to survive :stickout

Just remember that "rm -rf /" is not a good thing

I recommend:
1. Get a reseller account. Be sure to select a company with a good and active user support forum. You can do this for $35 a month. Start you business with tech support behind you. I suggest CPanel for a control panel. It is popular and it would be good experience for you. I would select a different control panel for the server (below), maybe Ensim, so that you can later make decisions based upon experience. I use McHost and VenturesOnline for reselling but there are a number of good possibilities. I put my most critical clients on VenturesOnline and charge more.

2. At the same time get a cheap dedicated server, where you have to do everything. As you learn more you can move sites over from your reselling. Operating out of two data centers (reseller and dedicated) means you can have a status page/forum available when a site is down. You can do this for between $100 and $200 a month. I use RackShack at $99 plus tax. I would definitely start with a cheap server to learn.

You can not learn all you need to know from a book. You will learn about the running of a hosting business from reselling in a resonably save/secure/supported environment. The fastest way to learn about servers is to actually manage a server where you have to depend upon yourself for most everything. When your business grows and you know from experience what you want in a server and control panel you can get a more expensive, managed server.

You can do all of the above for about $155 per month.

I ordered one yesterday from Fastservers and got the server about an hour ago. I am new to the whole dedicated side and unluckily new to the Cpanel/WHM (have a Plesk account), but the setup email is pretty self explanatory. I was able to login and start adjusting the standard settings and creating accounts, testing ftp etc and so far so good. Fingers crossed all goes well.
