View Full Version : Do you use VoIP?
crazlunatic 03-04-2008, 01:14 AM Do you use VoIP?
If so I would just like to know
What company you are with:
Quality of service:
One thing you don't like:
VoIP is becoming more common now. It is WAY cheaper than landline phone and I'm considering switching but I heard that it has a lot of problems.
I've used NuFone.....It worked well but the customer service is they worst ever, and I think only one person works there...
I've used http://voip.awsinternet.com and they were pretty good, but when I went to cancel, after clicking cancel I thought I was done and recently I noticed on my credit card statement i've been being charged for hte last 4 months.....I didnt see the part where I had to fax in a cancellation notice also...
I've never used Vonage personally, but I've heard that it is pretty reliable.
masfenix 03-04-2008, 02:13 AM The only i havnt switched yet is because of the essential 911 service/blackouts.
with a normal telephone line, your address/info/phone goes instantly to your nearest 911 center. With voip, your call is connected to a 'overall' 911 center, which might be pretty far from you. On top of that, you have to manually tell them your address/info for them to help you. This is pretty much useless if your in a situation where you are unable to speak.
Also when the power goes out (which it does rarely in canada), your modem goes out, and therefore your phone is out.
The technology is getting better, but unless safety for my family comes first. I hate pay 30 bucks a month for something i could have for 15, but thats life.
You could however put it in your business, or a heavy traffic area.
AmyWilliams 03-04-2008, 10:40 AM The only experience I have with VoIP is Vonage, and it was terrible. The call quality was awful. Half the calls inbound and outbound got an unexplainable busy signal. And don't get me started on their ridiculous contracts...

You got it...When you signup, you enter your address and thats the information that gets sent to e911
masfenix 03-04-2008, 12:08 PM oh thanks, ill have a look into the providers if that is thecase.
DreamHost-MikeS 03-04-2008, 12:25 PM Ever consider using your cell phone as your primary phone? I started doing this years ago and have a landline only for my DSL service. It's never charged because I never use it. :D
BlueHayes 03-04-2008, 09:13 PM I've tried VoIP a few times but always had problems, perhaps my not dedicating enough time to research and read up on it.. :D
micksss 03-04-2008, 10:10 PM I use lingo for my VOIP service. I had to deal with their support about a year ago and found it to be very frustrating because I couldn't understand the support rep to well. However they did end up resolving my issue and I've been fine since then.
FastServ 03-05-2008, 10:01 AM Our voip providers have our address on file here. That means that the address is transfered to the 911 operator automatically. We also have APC UPS devices on the internet and voip equipment that keeps the phones running for about an hour during an outtage.
With enough cell phones to go around, I think we're pretty well covered in the event of an emergency during extended power loss.
IMHO...Anyone in the webhosting industry still using POTs is just throwing money down the toilet.
The only i havnt switched yet is because of the essential 911 service/blackouts.
createsurvey 03-05-2008, 10:12 AM I use Skype (SkypeIn+SkypeOut). It works just fine for me.
paulhuynh 03-07-2008, 12:10 AM when you said using VOIP
are you talking replacing your home phone?
Are you talking about SIP trunking and DID service
We have been setup 4-5 PBX every months and set up business with wholesale account. Some are call center that do 50-100 concurrent calls.
We have zero issues. The only problems is the caller ID name we do not get that. We get caller id but no CALLER NAME
wdoyle2 03-07-2008, 03:06 PM I only recommend sipgate.co.uk as you recieve a free UK Telephone number such as for my area it would be 0116 or you could have 0845.
Quality is quite good, Voicemail works fine even when you are aboard.
Best company i have seen.
AmyWilliams 03-07-2008, 06:07 PM Does skype count as voip? We've used a few, the names of which I don't remember. Notably, Vonage is awful.
