View Full Version : Godaddy's ridiculous IIS7/.NET 3.5 policy

I was happy to hear that Godaddy now offers IIS7 support. I have been waiting for .NET 3.5 since November. Image how disappointed I was to find out that it was only for new hosting accounts and not current accounts. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

This is the response I got from their tech support:

Thank you for contacting Online Support. Unfortunetely iis 7 is only new Windows hosting accounts have IIS 7 as an available Web server option. You would need to cancel and repurchase the hosting plan. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Here is my response:

WHAT! That is unacceptable! You mean that new customers get the good stuff, but loyal customers get the shaft. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Is there someone from the server group that could confirm this? Maybe someone with more insight on why this can't be done. This seems a little backwards.

This is their response:

Thank you for contacting Online Support. This has been confirmed by our advanced hosting department. It is unfortunately not possible to upgrade existing hosting accounts to IIS 7. The issue is technical in nature, and is in no way meant to inconvenience you. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

And this is my response:

So then the only way I can get .NET 3.5 hosting is to cancel my accounts with you? Well, if I am going to have to go through the hassle of canceling my accounts, I might as well go with another hosting company that can be more accommodating and maybe one that actually knows something. There is no reason that you cannot move me to IIS7 without me having to go through all the trouble of canceling my accounts. I manage IIS servers and do web development for a living and know this is possible to move sites easily. It may be outside your realm of expertise, but your advance server department should be able to do it without any problem. I don't understand why you keep telling me a bunch of bulls**t when I know it is not true.

Well, to be truthful, I could careless about IIS7. I just want .NET 3.5 so you should just upgrade your current servers to .NET 3.5. Let me know when this will be done. I don't want to move my hosting to another company, but I will if need be. There is no reason this cannot be done and telling me that this is technical in nature is wrong and you know it. I would like to talk to someone that would like to keep my business.

So it appears that new customers get the love while the existing customers get the shaft. I have hosted with them for about a year and this is the first time I have had any trouble with them. This is the dumbest move they can make. I can't just cancel my account and recreate it. That is too much of a pain in the butt.

Maybe Alicia R. will contact me or respond to this ridiculous claim. She seems to be the only one over their with any real insight.

Hi

Your not the first person I have spoken to this week who complains about GoDaddy and how they work.

.net 3.5 also works fine on IIS6, personally I wouldnt use IIS7 in production until its at least a few months old, this way any bugs others have found should of been fixed :)

I am not sure why they wouldn't be upgrading their existing servers to include .NET 3.5 as well?

I don't know why either, but they just keep giving me lame answers. I was hopping someone with some actual server knowledge would contact me. I know their tech support people probably can't do anything because there isn't a special button to click that does it for them. I would think the someone in their advance server division would have the know-how.

Keep in mind, I don't want to leave Godaddy. I have had excellent service with them. Better than any hosting company before them. I just think they are being ridiculous about this.

Here is their latest response to me from the last email I sent them above:

Thank you for contacting Online Support in regards to upgrading your hosting account. We apologize for any inconvenience but you would need to cancel the old hosting and set up a new shared account with the IIS 7 option active. Any time remaining on the hosting account is fully refundable. To cancel a hosting account, please use the following instructions:

• Select "Hosting Account List" under the "My Products" section.
• Click the check box next to the account you need to cancel.
• Click the 'Cancel Account' button.
• Click the green 'Save Changes' button to confirm the cancellation.

Note: Canceling your hosting account will delete any files that you have stored within that hosting account on the server. Be sure that you have copies of any files you want to keep before deleting your account. Also, if you are using the email address provided to you for free as part of your hosting package, it will also be removed and all messages previously contained with in that email account will be irretrievable. As such, canceling a hosting account is permanent and all information associated with the account is lost.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

I guess that is the way it is. Instead of coming up with a real solution, they just keep sending the same emails back to me.

This is some-what common in web hosting. Just as if your on a *nix server that still uses apache/php4.3 and you want to use apach3/php5.. they aren't just going to upgrade the server. It could mess up a lot of peoples accounts.

If GoDaddy actually had "good" support they would create you another account that works with IIS 7, then move your stuff for you, then cancel your old account. But like I said "GoDaddy".

If they don't want to add the feature to the existing servers, that's not your decision to make.

Good hosts will move your site from plan to plan, I have been with multiple hosts that have done that for me. That is just horrible to have to resetup all your mail accounts and web site. But hey they had a cool comercial

I will tell you when it comes to domain registrations GoDaddy is the first place I buy, but hosting, no way!

Find a good .net host Discountasp.net, CrystalTech, SoftSys I have used these ones quite a bit and I will tell you they are quality, they make sure you get what your company needs not this bs run around.

Here is the last email I sent them:

Doing that is not an option. I run a business on there and to have it down for the amount of time it would take to do this is unacceptable. I would have to re-upload the database and files. It would be down for about 48 hours while everything got updated.

So since you guys are going to accommodate current customers that way, what are the chances of you installing the .NET 3.5 framework on the IIS6 servers. That shouldn't be a problem. I am sure your current customers who want to use .NET 3.5 would be fine with that.

I will probably get some lame excuse about not being able to discuss this or whatever.

You chose Godaddy, what did you expect?

Well, I would expect better treatment. I have had other hosting companies also who have been worse than Godaddy (ASPNIX, SWIFTHOST, MYHOSTING to name a few). To post a statement like yours isn't really helpful, but thanks anyway.

vincentw56,

Going through the conversation that you had with the GoDaddy support staff, it seems that they will not be enabling .NET 3.5 support for your domain unless you cancel and re-order. I understand that it is a painful process but you can ask them to assist you in the migration process whereby they can migrate your web-files/email accounts/databases to the new account from the server end and hence ease your task.

Good luck!

I was going to ask them if they would even if they charged me.

On a side note, I was looking at moving to SoftSys if they don't. :)

Here is the last email I got from them. I asked them if they were going to upgrade their current servers to .NET 3.5.

As the upgrade has just taken place, it is currently only available for new accounts. There may be a path for existing accounts to move to the new version of IIS in the future. However, the for the moment, the only way to upgrade is to setup a new account. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I was contacted by Alicia from GoDaddy last night. She explained to me that they had two options for me. One was to have them migrate my account to IIS7, but there would be some downtime. The other was to wait for them to upgrade the IIS6 servers which they are preparing to do.

The nice thing is that someone actually listened to me instead of spewing the same "canned" response. It is nice to know that they are willing to help me move the accounts to IIS7. Since all I want is .NET 3.5 right now, I will wait on them to upgrade their servers.

This is the first time I have had an issue with GoDaddy and I am glad they finally helped me. It may not have been easy or quick, but I did get the response I was looking for.

I have been with other hosting companies (mentioned above), that have said, "too bad", when I have asked for something.

If something changes, I will post it here.

Agreed, but he shouldn't have to cancel his current plan just to get moved to a new server.
