View Full Version : Mac OS X Server & Macintosh Racmounts?

Hey there!

Quick question - Is anyone using Mac OS X Server? I'd love to develop in the Mac environment, especially if I
can get a hold of WebObjects 4.5 cheap somewhere (which is both a development and distributed deployment package.)

But I don't know of anyone offering Mac dedicated servers, or someone who creates Mac Racmounts.

Thanks for any thoughts/leads!

- Bert :o)

You might want to look at 888.net (http://www.888.net).

The Mac OS X is supposed to be based on a Linux core... does that mean it can run regular Linux apps like Apache?

It's actually based on a BSD 4.4 kernel. With an emulation layer running on top of that for backwards compatibility with previous Mac applications. (Darwin).

GNU tools have already been ported, so you can expect bash, tar, gzip, et al.
Apache I believe has already been ported too. Don't quote me on that though.

I wonder if remote administration will be possible like with regular unices...

Ssh'ing into a Mac would be a cool experiance, no doubt.
If you get this setup, be sure to post with a "uname -a". :)

Can't say I've seen any businesses offering dedicated Mac servers, though I'm sure theres nothing to stop you from colocating one someplace.

Quite a few places can be coaxed into taking machines which aren't rackmounts. Just need some sweet-talkin'. ;)

Vince.

I use an OS X server and yes it has telnet, among other standard unix functions. As far as rackmounts, I don't believe Apple makes one, which sucks.

Hello,
a few things that I've read so far and that are facts:

Kernel - Mach
OS - BSD
Apache - I'm running one, it works great
Remote access - Telnet, SSH, FTP, you name it.
Rack - Yes, now available.

Regards,
-Chris.

Where I can do Demo on this Xserve as root admin management?

Look in the back of Macworld for Rackmounts from Apple Towers. We do Mac hosting, but mainly for people wanting Filemaker Pro databases. Otherwise Linux does just fine (and is cheaper).
