Well, as I look around in the industry, I need to know more and get more aquainted. So, I am looking to get two questions answered:
1. How did you learn about the hosting industry (server specs, etc...)?
2. What books, websites, etc... will benefit any new person to the industry?
If you can give me any tips, you can just send me an email at derek@advantahost.com

I just learned it as I went along during three years on the net...
No offence but - I don't think you should be trying to absorb all of this intel in 12 days (which is when your host opens...) - you really should be giving yourself at least a month to learn all this stuff to a decent degree so you can give technical support? Would anyone agree there?

I understand that, which is why I will not be providing the neccessary technical support at first. I have a friend that will be helping until I get in the swing of things, however, I don't want to watch someone to learn... I want to read and grasp the stuff myself.

Read all of the RFCs related to the Internet services that you will be providing. :)

You dont need to just grasp the tech stuff, you need a good business practise in order to please your customers and satisfy their expectations.

Sorry, but I disagree. You need to do both.
Best way to learn is to install linux on a machine and play with it. Break it, fix it, tweak it.
I Do agree with lightnin ,
Even I guess tech stuff is much more important. If you wanna run a business, doesn't matter what kind, you've got know every single piece of it.
I know a CEO of hosting company who has established his business last year, he's zero with Linux and other stuff, and always he's server admins are just fooling him in too many different ways and costing him time and money.
You always should think that you are going to have a business as your profession. So, always wouldn't be a one person or two person operation business. You might start good and you should keep going good and great. Then when you wanna hire some employees and server admins, you wouldn't have the problem what the a *CEO* of company having it at the moment.
Here's a very informative link which leads you to web hosting reselling and some other stuff related to web hosting.
Hope it helps you:
