hello to all,

first sorry for my english :) I hope you will unterstand my question.

i'am trying to restore our raq550 for the first time. I use the original Sun Restore CD and connect a PC to the Sun over a crossover cable. This works fine.

Here's my problem:

For more than 2,5 hours the Sun tries to format the disks. The LCD shows
"/dev /md1
formatting"

How many times takes this process? The documentation tells about 15 -20 minutes for the complete restore process.

Do i have the wrong HD's? I changed the old HD's with 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200 80GB ATA (ST380215A)?

Any hints?

Thank you

Seagate drives will no longer work on the RaQ servers. I believe this has to do with Seagate discontinuing their ATA drives & not building the IDE controller information to run them in the RaQ's.

I spent two days with this as I also tried with 2 Seagate Barracuda 80s and it did the EXACT same thing yours is doing. Maxtor and Western Digital are your best bet. They should work fine, just don't use anything over 120GB as the primary (boot) drive or it will not work.

I have a feeling if you use hard drives other than Seagate (I have two Maxtor 80GB drives running in my RaQ4r) you'll be just fine. Some will say to avoid IBM and Fujitsu as well.

Thanks for your answers,

the first HD I tried was a Western Digitial WD800BB!
But the HD doesn't fit.
Also I found this hint for Western Digital WD800JB -> These drives will not work in a real RaQ550

Who use a "real" RaQ550 and can give me information about the usable HD's?

thanks
