It varies for each search engine, but Google's pattern for several months has been to update the database near the end of each month -- roughly around the 24th or so. They crawl heavily right after each update, and the results of that crawl appear in the next monthly update.

So depending on when you make the changes they should appear anywhere between a month and two months later.

The exception is if your site is one that they have chosen for more frequent, even daily, crawls. Some sites with a lot of pertinent incoming links and regular, daily updates (that is, news sites, for example) are tagged as "fresh" and are updated regularly.

Other search engines: two weeks to three months, or more.

Two choices: for Google, get a high PageRank (through good incoming links) and do daily updates and wait.

Or, paid spidering programs at Inktomi, AltaVista, etc.
