This guy, when I picked it up, only had 64 in it.
The GUI was saying that 97% was in use with 11.0 free megs. So I upped to 128. Was still at 90%. Then I went with 256. Much improvement, but I'm thinking 512 at least will be necessary on this one. Did the original RaQ 550 OS do this too?

512 will work fine, you can add 2 x 512 for a total of 1GB/Ram, the uinit will only show 768 (raq3, raq4)
Hmm will it actually be utilizing the entire gig? If not I'll just use a 512 and a 256.

I only use 512 and 768 on my raq4i, raq4r, raq3, and xtr. The Qube3 i only got as far as 512 MB never had the use of more ram. Since i own more than 60 Sun Cobalt units i got to play with different types of RAM :), the StrongBOLT install will only show 768 / 880 MB. You can read more about this setup here http://www.osoffice.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=124&highlight=ram
Running Centos / BQ your raq will not be using 1GB of RAM.

they don't support 1 gig of memory very well... the builders never expected it to work out and I have seen problem after problem from running 1 gig... stick with 512
centos is a bigger kernel and it uses more memory... 256 according to redhat... at the same time linux uses a lot in general for other things
