I am considering giving up smoking, as I know it is doing me damage. However I am weak willed.

Wondering what percentage of the population (at least the WHT population) still smoke.

Or maybe a more interesting thread; How did you start? :)

I smoke been smoking since I was 8 years old or 11 years old. Depending on what you would call starting:

8 Years old a girl from new York City started me smoking Salems. I smoked every now and then to be "cool"

11 Years old in Military school I started a pack a day.

Smoking is bad blech....I too am weak willed

Errr, it is repugnant. That is why many of us want to quit. Not to save our lives, but rather to make those people happy that find our very costly habbit to be repugnant. :D

Actually, many of us smokers do realize that people do not like it. Some of us are considerate. I always smoke out doors, even in public buildings that DO allow smoking. I know it is my habbit, and not yours, so I do the best I can not to bug you with it. But...if you insist on coming to my house and stepping out on the deck with me....and the wind shifts, ya just might get a whiff of that ole smoke.

Dennis Leary had a good piece on non-smokers/smokers, will have to try to find it.

BTW: on the same token.... I find CHEESE to be repugnant. Very disgusting stuff, and people eat it. Yup, might have to do ith growing up in a dairy area, and seeing how that crap is made. But no matter, your choice to eat that stuff.

:D :D :D

I smoked regularly for 5 years (age 13 to age 18) and quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant about a year and a half ago.

I started with a girl who was my best friend, we were in 6th grade and I was 12 (note that I said I smoked REGULARLY from 13 to 18). Her mom was a way heavy smoker, there literally were cartons of cigarettes all over their house, heh, so when I spent the night one night we took one partially full carton and smoked a few cigarettes out of one pack, then divided the rest and smoked them other times we were together, and after school with other friends.

I can't stand most smokers. (I say most so I don't stereotype them)

Finally about a week ago I was walking into my office and there was a car parked outside with a woman smoking in it. She was apparently done and rolled down her window and tossed her butt outside on the sidewalk. I walked over, picked it up and knocked on her window. When she rolled it down I tossed the butt into her car and didn't say a word. She had the nerve to start screaming at me as I walked away.

I did what any other gentleman would do when being screamed at by a lady... I gave her the finger and kept going.

Good for you. There is no excuse for littering, if it is a McDonalds burger wrapper, or a cig butt, it is wrong.

All I can say is Quit now before you have to start having limbs taken off (yep all cos of smoking) or cant breathe properly.

Or get Cancer

I dont wish any of the above on people that do smoke because i can understand how difficult it is to give up, but just look at yourself each time you smoke and know in your heart that its another fraction of your life going up in smoke and one step closer to killing yourself.

Frankly, those that say they cant quit arent of any use to the world, go jump off a 30 floor buildingm at least that way you wont be killing yourself slowly and painfully with cancer, but more shortly and sharply.

For those of you that smoke with or around kids, shame on you, they deserve a better life than to be around smoke so much getting addicted to the stuff before they have even had a chance to make up their own mind.

Thats about it from me, I spoke my mind for once :D

Good Night - God Bless

Hating litter and saying something to someone about it is one thing. Throwing lit cigarettes at a person especially in their car is another. If it was me I probably would have knocked you out. :)

There is a saying: "Don't throw cigarette butts in our toilet, we don't piss in your ashtray".

Interesting survey results released today (large and indepth look into smoking) and it found that just 3 cigarettes a day doubles the chance of developing heart disease.

There was a cardiologist that said that if people didn't smoke then he'd have hardly anything to do for people under the age of 40.

Then again, it now looks like toast, cereals (as in breakfast), roast potatoes, chips, crisps are also carcinogenic.

Give it away Dave. I did, Tuesday morning last week. I have absolutely no will power, and thought that I'd never do it or at best...at least that I would suffer trying to do so after 22 years of the smoking. Mate, I stopped that morning and armed with a few packs of chewing gum and mints, I have never looked back. If I can do it...

Good luck with it.

I don't smoke, nor have I ever smoked.

I personally can't stand it. It smells horrible, and especially the smell that lingers on smokers afterwards (sorry if I offend anybody).

I've tried the gum (worthless) and the patch which actually DOES work but makes me dizzy...strangely enough.

The only way I've ever been able to quit is to cut down and then stop cold turkey. Stress is what gets me though. Trying again in a couple days...evil addiction

I don't smoke and don't care to be around people who do but, I don't see it as being so terribly dangerous when compared to other things deemed more 'acceptable'. After all, smoking takes at least 40 years to kill you. I know of only 1 case where smoking killed a young person and that was because he smoked over 100 cigarettes in a very short period on a dare. (Happened in the UK a few years back).

On the other hand, those of you who think it's safer to down a few brewskies after work are far more likely to die from that. Alcohol destroys more lives and kills more people of all ages every day than all other drugs combined (including nicotine). I see no difference between beer and crack cocaine when it comes to being lethal.

I may catch some flack for saying this because addicts tend to be very protective of their drug of choice. That's fine. I believe each person is free to make their own choices.

On a lighter note: Best of luck Dave. I hope you kick the demon :D . More power to you. I think you'll win.

I used to smoke...not cigarettes though. Had a good time, but I had to grow up. It's been about 15 years now and I've never missed it. Can't stand being around any type of smoke, especially cigarette smoke. I think it's just deciding you don't want to do it anymore. Anyone wishing to quit whatever habit you have, I wish you the best of luck.

QuantumK

I have never smoked and never tried either. I can't think of inhailing something that's not air. I had to take medicine against broncitis with an inhaler, and I thought I would never make it. I know... smoke is not the same, but still... just the thought...

My father stopped cold turkey and so did my hubby (before we met). Some people find it easier to stop if they chew on carrotsticks.

To all smokers who try to quit...

GOOD LUCK! HOPE YOU MAKE IT! DON'T GIVE UP! GOOD ON YOU!

Now, print it and put it somewhere on the monitor and the fridge-door and by the phone and on the front door and any other place you can think of.

Its funny you mention that.. I first started smoking when I was about 15 or so.. Smokes were about 2 bucks a pack then, I went to NYC last week with my wife and I saw marlboros for 8.35 a pack in times square.. kinda made me glad we both quit about a year and a half ago.. I have no clue how i did it seeing I am not really a person with will power but I think i realized that i was killing myself and I was paying both goverment and the tobacco industry for killing me at that.. I just quit cold turkey one day for some reason. I do smoke a butt every once in a while if I am out drinking some brew but I know for sure I will never go back to it..

lol! Yeah, I remember kids doing that when I was little. I think that alone is the reason I never smoked! :D

Truth be told, after college, engagement/unengagement and everything else, I'm amazed I never started.

Maybe I'd be less tense if I did! Naw, no sense in starting now...

As a devout non-smoker, non-drinker and pretty well non-everything-fun :), I wish you luck in your quest to quit.

If you need an incentive to quit and you have drapes in your house (preferably sheer drapes), take them off the windows one day and wash them. When you notice they become much brighter as a result of getting all of the smoke out of them (or to look at it another way, how much more disgusting they looked before with all of the smoke in them), that should be incentive to quit right there. It worked on my sister.
