Sorry for the newbie post that may have already been answered in the past....

I just got my first dedicated server and I would like to know how to set up nameservers so that I can point my domains to this new server at my registrar (Verisign).

My server has 2 ip addresses.

Thanks in advance

Do you have alredy your name servers?
If not... Go where you register the domain name that you want to be your name server. Look for a form to complete and enter the name server"ns1.youdoain.net and ns2.yourdomain.net" with the ip for each one.
wait until prpagate

I don't think so. The server was just configured yesterday and it is pretty much empty.

I'll be starting from scratch.

Not sure if you get what I mean. I want to create new nameservers which are pointing to my dedicated server. Don't I have to modify config files, etc?

There are no domains on my dedicated server at this time. Once the nameservers are configured then I want to be able to point my other domains to them so that I can easily move them to the dedicated server.

DarkHorizons,

Do you mean to say you want to setup 2 nameservers from scratch? Or were you planning on running dns services on your dedicated server as well?

If you're looking to setup nameservers check out tinydns at http://djbdns.org.

Do I dare ask what the difference is?

Technically no, but I wasn't clear what you were planning on doing and if you understood that more hardware would possibly be involved.

In this case just setup tinydns on your dedicated server and register it as a dns server with your domain registrar.

Just some domain advise.

After your name server is setup, transfer your domain out of Verisign to www.GoDaddy.com www.eNom.com or www.Joker.com

These are much faster, have better support and are much cheeper to. The transfer will not cause any down time either.

Also - have you "created" both name servers at Verisign yet?
It takes up to 2 weeks in some cases, but transfering the domain takes only 5 days. It might be best to transfer the domain before you creat the NS at verisin/netsol - despite the extra week this might delay your server comeing online.

where do you create/register the name servers on the Verisign site? I can't seem to find that anywhere. I assume this is different then registering the domain for the nameserver.

Never used verisign control panel but there must be option of creating nameserver. It will take 24-48hours before it reflect the changes so don't expect the changes just after creating the nameserver.
Try

www.mydns.com
www.zonedit.com
www.ultradns.com

I found it on verisign. basically you need to change the nameservers for the domain to point to one the new nameserver that doesn't exist yet. It will then ask you for the IPs, etc and I assume that that's all there is to it since it didn't give me any error messages etc. we'll see...
