Which one is the best overall (considering price, performance, etc):

- UBB ( http://www.infopop.com ), $249 personal/non profit owned licese for use of under 1 domain only.
- vBulletin ( http://www.vbulletin.com ), $160 owned license for use of under 1 domain only.
- Ultraboard ( http://www.ub2k.com ), $39.95 owned licese for use of as many instances under one domain.
- HEBB ( http://www.hescripts.com ), $35 owned license for use of under 1 domain only.
- ikonboard ( http://www.ikonboard.com ), free owned license
- bbhacks ( http://www.bbhacks.com ), free owned license
- phpBB ( http://www.phpBB.com ), free owned licese

Any other else I have missed? I know VB is probably the best, but please consider also the price (i.e. whether paying that much can be justified if PHPBB is free, for example). On the other hand, also consider the performance, look and feel, functionality, etc. Note: One vote per person, please :D. I will get the numbers later :D

I vote for phpBB (ver 1.2.0 and newere) since it's pretty fast and it's free, though it does not look really that great compared with the others ... Any other votes?

cheers,

Forget Ultraboard that thing is no good. I had it and switched over to UBB which is much better, but the price of it keeps going up.

Well, yes I would vote for them. However the Vbulletin looks pretty good to me too. I'm not familiar with any of those other ones though.

The support of Ultraboard stinks, seriously. The creater of Ultraboard doesn't even seem to speak english well.

I vote for UBB and VB.

If you're asking if you missed any forum programs, the answer is "yes, dozens of them". If you're asking if you have all the UBB look alikes, the answer is still "yes", even if you limit the search for PERL and PHP programs. There are a lot of them out there, many more so than in 1998 when I looked at all I could find, and probably more than most of us realize. I have some links on my site to places like David Woolley's site that list most of the available programs.

As you hint at, the price will be a factor for some in their judgment of how good a program is. Free with some bugs may be a better value in their eyes than $35 or $160 for a more refined program.

Of your choices here, HEBB's site goes to a domain name for sale site, phpBB's site is still down, so they may have disappeared also. BBhacks is on an early version, 0.86, so there is probably much to be done yet.

These types of programs contains so many features, that using them is the only way someone can be sure they have all that is desired and that they function well. You sure can't go by what the authors say. My forum members helped test a few programs (also in 1998) and we found the ones we tested didn't measure up to the claims about them.

That said, I frequent some forums that use Vbulletin, UBB, and 1 or 2 that use Ultraboard. Vbulletin wins in my opinion. UBB is outdated and some of the vbulletin forums switched over from it.

yes.. indeed, the site for HEBB is http://www.hescripst.com. Thank you for noting that.... PHP site can be accessed using its IP at http://216.74.122.162/ although accessing through their discussion/support board gave me problem also.

The reason I go with phpBB is not only it's free but also because i think it's already proven to be fast and good.

Check this out:
http://www.s-series.org/phpBB/index.php

right now they have 68003 messages with 1459 members. Loads pretty fast for me...

OK... another vote goes for VB...:D

I usually go for paid scripts. It's simply because I can "demand" features/support as a paid customer. I once used free based bb scripts also. It was hard for me to demand something since everything was free. Not to mention the support is way more professional when it comes to paid scripts.(Not all but at least Vb and UBB do)
And I believe in "Money makes the world goes around."

Err... the same thing does not apply for Microsoft, isn't it? Quite a contrary, Linux supporter is all around the world and it's free :D

I like Ultraboard, put my vote down for it and let the abuse begin. They installed it for me, had everything running and I haven't needed the support because it ran so good. :-b

So far I have used ikonboard, phpBB, blazeboard, tforums (is that its official name?) and vbulletin.
They are all pretty good, but I had to customize all of them since they didn't come with the exact features and look I wanted..
overall vbulletin was the easiest for me to customize and install since it comes packed with features that actually work already (no hacking was needed for it).

so my vote goes to vbulletin, but the others work just as well! :D

All Linux is free, including Red Hat Linux. It's a condition of the license. Distributors can charge a nominal fee when they distribute it on CD-ROM. It's more convenient than downloading it from the RH site (or others). When you buy the boxed versions directly from RH, you get support included. That's what you are paying for.

Oopss Unintentionally done... For some reasons I put your vote for ikonboard :(

This is the reason why you have to let the machine do the counting :) Even with only such a few votes, manual counting has yield me an error :D :D
