I set up an account with everyone.net for a domain that I have which is inactive to get a feel for the process etc.

I was a bit perturbed when after it propagated and I went to set up some individual <user>@myname.com accounts to see the questions they wanted answered from users.

Complete address
birthdate
gender
occupation
Industry
salary range (optional)
whether you buy on the net
You can chose whether you want to be e-mailed with offers

Their privacy statement indicates they do not share this info with anyone. Right then why if you don't want to be contacted should you need to provide anything other than a name address and e-mail contact.

Does anyone know whether other e-mail service companies such as bigmailbox require similar info? I cetainly cannot with good conscience encourage anyone using a site I controlled to sign up and provide this kind of info.

What you can do is fill in bogus information.
It is the easiest and quickest way.

I don't think that is the best way to approach these things. Maybe someone who sets up a competitive service with more anonymity will get more signups and still do just as well because the adds are there on everypage.

That is much more acceptable. Most of the objectional info is optional. For those not wanting to check it out the only mandatory info was name age and gender.

How well does this work?

One other thing I didn't like about the everyone.net was that the domain creating ie: historyseek.com didn't automatically get to reserve some names like webmaster@historyseek.com. sales@* support@* etc. Can this be done with bigmailbox.com?

Yes, you can reserve emails with Big Mail Box.

Reserving emails with BigMailBox: It has a default that already saves a bunch of names and you can add more as you like. Once I get my webhosting site running, I'm going to offer MX record changes for both but will recommend BigMailBox to my clients.

I'd go with everyone.net bec. it lets you edit/delete any user , with bigmailbox.com once a user signs up and you want to delete that user, you have to email their tech support and justify/explain why you want userx@yourdomain.co deleted.

I think I prefer the e-mail route. How would you like to have your password hacked and find all your e-mail accounts deleted.

Everyone.net may have been the first but they are scary in many ways.
They also don't answer e-mail quiries to quickly. Sent several messages now over a few days and no answer. They don't even use an autoresponder to say they got your message and someone will get back to you. Not very professional IMO

Hmm, I think I will give bigmailbox a try. I kind of like the fact that webmasters cannot simply drop e-mail accounts at their discretion. Plus, I haven't gotten over the fact that everyone.net never responded to my e-mail problems with one of my domains. In addition, their "add e-mail address" and filtering features stink. Then again, their services are free... so I will never complain directly to them. I just whine to this forum.
