Looking after one server is hard enough. But how many have you managed to take on?

You would need to look into additional staff.

Last night while installing updates on our servers I realized something. It's a pain to update them when they are running different versions of RedHat and different configurations of software, e.g. one runs Ensim, and another runs custom software.

When I saw "85" the first thing that came to mind was why on earth Alan still hung around posting on WHT when instead he could be living on a private island somewhere... then it occured to me that he was kidding :stickout

heh, believe me nore 85 or 200 servers would allow you to live in a private island, we own 176 machines, today is holiday in our country and look what we are doing: working.

We're first italian private network, talkin' about number of servers (if you exclude big telephone companies) I have to admit we have been lucky during last 18 months.

Globe,

I am sure you are successful :) with that recent law that forces Italian websites to be hosted inside Italy or at least by an italian webhost :)

I wish complete success for you :)

I think Brendan stole UBC's server. I saw one matching that description in it's entirity at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=464356

wowie where did you take that new sounds pretty good.
Honestly there is not such a law, they stopped doing that way on 1944 (^_^)

I think about 65% of italian sites are hosted outside IT at bespoken companies as Vdi, Pwebtech, Dialtone, Colossus, Alabanza, etc...

Perhaps you are talking about dot-i domains? They must be Maintained by an itailan company cause it's not easy to become a Nic-It partner, but they can be hosted really everywhere.

But your idea is pretty nice to me, next national polling We'd like to ask for it.

Globe,

I am sure I have read a thread about that law in Italy last year here on WHT. Let me see ...

Oh I found it: (It was discussed on June 2001) It seems my memory works well :D

Italy -> laws like Cuba, China, Afghanistan (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13459&highlight=italian+and+government)

By the way, sorry about thread title (I do not agree with it in anyway) but it is original thread title.

Yes that was about a new law made to help on-line news web sites, or on-line editors.

They mean site has to be recorded in an official register just like a normal newspaper; it's not for ordinary web sites but only for sites who supply "recurring information" (weekly, daily news, ...)

That law is regulating information issues, you have to hire a journalist and an editor to publish those kind of sites. Somebody might agree, somebody not.

Fortunately nothing to do with the rest of web sites.

bye bye

Well, we have 80 servers in total and certainly don't have the time for holidays. :D

I have this feeling Kiwi, that you'd be itching to be working if you took holidays. Just take the laptops with you and you can do both. :D
