View Full Version : Is anybody using REDIRECTION.NET?
I was looking at their site (http://www.redirection.net/what.html)
It seems to be a great service!
Does anybody use their redirection service?
Could you post here some domain names which are redirected with their service? So I can see if it really works.
Thanks

hows about MyDomain (http://www.MyDomain.com/), they are ...
- free
- new also MyDNS is free (Example: http://XXX.YYY.com)
- good Service
gthorley 03-07-2001, 01:58 PM Why would anyone want to pay for redirection service when they can get the same and possibly more by using mydomain.com or zoneedit.com. It was a good deal when included free with domain registration but now I don't see why someone would ante up $5. a name to do it.
mydomain.com offers only url cloaking;
redirection.net offers url cloaking AND path forwarding.
So,
let's say I register the domain name "myname.com" and I have two pages located at
http://www.xyz.com/user/myname/music/first.html
and
http://www.xyz.com/user/myname/links/second.html
- using mydomain.com as redirection service, the browser shows only
"www.myname.com", for both pages (that is url cloaking).
- using redirection.net as redirection service, the browser shows
"www.myname.com/music/first.html" for the 1st page
and
"www.myname.com/links/second.html" for the 2nd page
That is the power of "path forwarding", and that's why you have to pay $5 with redirection.net...
klisis 03-07-2001, 07:18 PM I agree. Why would I pay when I can get a great service for free?
And for url cloaking AND path forwarding, I don't need both.
klisis,
I didn't start this topic to determine if you need that service or not.
I wanted to visit some sites that use the "path forwarding" service offered by redirection.net to see how and if it really works.
gthorley 03-08-2001, 10:29 AM The problem is both are using frames to do url cloaking and if you want to have any success with search engine spiders or are trying to disguise the true name you are hosted under both fail and I can't see the point in paying for this.
The type of person who is going to look at whether this is a subdomain directory will look by opening in a new frame whichever method you use and the person who doesn't care will not bother with what is displayed in the location bar. What exactly do you think your getting with path forwarding?
You would be far better off IMO to get a hosting package which will provide a number of free domain pointers for the names being redirected as you are obviously going to use the resources you are paying for with your hosting package regardless.
This is one of the reasons why I am switching hosting from Tera-byte as they will not point any domains but want me to use redirection.
Unless you have a huge need for bandwidth there are ample very good hosts out there who will point a few extra domains for you.
The type of person who is going to look at whether this is a subdomain directory will look by opening in a new frame whichever method you use
Using url cloaking and path forwarding TOGETHER, the user won't notice the frames.
Using only url cloaking, the user will notice the frame, because his browser shows him always "www.domainname.com" for each page and link he visits.
the person who doesn't care will not bother with what is displayed in the location bar.
I disagree:
if I have an interesting page about music located at
www.xyz.com/public/user/myname/music/index.html,
with path forwarding I can get that page at the address www.myname.com/music/index.html which is easier to remember; so the user will prefer to type www.myname.com/music/ to get directly to that page...
Now, I'm sure you're thinking: "hey, you can get that with every webhosting service!"
I agree, but with hosting companies you have to pay at least $5 per month.
With redirection.net (ok, it's not exactly the same thing as having a real webhosting service), but you pay $5 per YEAR (considering your site is located on a free server).
We offer cloaking and path forwarding at http://jwdx.com if you can find a free service or the like to host your DNS.

jw, thanks.
I'll check it out
Chicken 03-09-2001, 01:08 PM jw-
Per the email I sent you...
I know it is a free service, but we'd prefer that you set up a signature with that URL in in (and a description).
Does this board not add sigs to previously posts automatically? I have a sig now with compliance but it doesn't show up on anything posted before the date of modification.
Chicken 03-09-2001, 10:32 PM Justin, I took care of it for you. You have to go back into the message and check the box that says, "show signature". You also had a typo in the sig. which I took care of. You are good to go now...
Ok.
Here is the conclusion (I can't believe it, but):
NOBODY IS USING REDIRECTION.NET
Chicken 03-13-2001, 08:10 PM Well, they do have plenty of users, though maybe just not here. I'm not sure where you could find users, but I think you may find a few at least at http://www.freewebspace.net/forums (worth a try).
