View Full Version : Is RackShack good for commercial use?

I am in the process of open up a commerce business, is RackShack a good host for commercial use?

I am looking for:

> reliability
> scalability (important)
> instant emergency response
> fast hardware replacement (in case of failure)

I also thought of Rackspace, but very expensive.

By the way, I am from Australia.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

what you're looking for
rackshack would not do well

rackspace would
you get what you pay for

try a company like pwebtech
i cant think of any off hand
fastservers seems very responsive?

you get what you pay for in my opinion.

when it comes to bandwidth, support, and the like.. i think Tom said it best with,

"Cheap, Fast, and Good. Pick 2."

I always agree with Jedito :)

Or if you can pay more money rackspace provides a reliable service too.

> reliability - nope
> scalability (important) - maybe a little
> instant emergency response - not a chance
> fast hardware replacement - hardware replacement takes weeks sometimes

I suggest going with Rackspace.

I'll recommend webreseller.net... cheap, and reliable.

Although after 4 days webreseller still has not set up our new server.

I highly recommend rackspace :agree:

I have used them for 2 years now, and have no complaints. (and no downtime :D )

Just wanted to put in my good word for Rackspace, we've been with them for over one year now and will continue to use them :).

never use rackshack for commercial use cause they do not take any responsibility of hardwares. After they swap my HD, I asked

"did you really get into test HD like bad blocks test before you swap it??"......." is it a new one".....

their answer is

" no evidence to show hd problems..."

So i guess they did not test harwares before hand it to you...
again, it is good only for personal use

RackSpace's "Linux Professional":

Single AMD 1 GHZ Processor
256 MB Ram
20 GB hard drive
30 GB burstable bandwidth

$249/month

How could you possibly make a profit off of something like that?

Very easily. The clients that you will attract will want only the best. You obviously wont be selling them $5/month packages. It does work though. ;)

I will add that you won't make as much profit as some others may, but I would rather give the best to my customers and not have to worry about the downtime. Well worth it in my opinion.

And you have a lot of downtime with Rackshack? I know I don't.

I have no downtime with Rackshack because I don't use them. I know alot of other people on these forums have had problems with them though.

I guess I will have to take a closer look at rackspace, they seem to be very reliable.

Even though it costs more at first with Rackspace but in the long run, it would costs less.

What do you guys think about FastServers? They have a free call number here in Australia, which is great. I also emailed them and they answered what I asked them. Good!

Rackspace are more expensive yes, but how many times have you seen a server down that has been hosted at rackspace?

I have only heard good things about fast severs too. Although at $98/month that would be un-managed. It depends if you want a managed or un-managed server. I think they they use the he.net DC (someone else can correct me on that if I'm wrong)

Also take a look at www.webreseller.net for unmanaged servers, also a little more expensive, and take a look ummm actually, if you want the name of a few good places that can manage the server for you, send me a PM :)

I'm in Australia as well, and so far, the place i have my servers at have been very quick to respond to email inquiries I may have had. My point there is being in Australia isn't necessarily a disadvantage :)

Greetings:

We've had a test (play) server (Compaq if it matters) at Rackshack.net since 4/21/2002.

Based on our Enterprise network monitoring system, up time from that day to yesterday inclusive is 99.12%.

This translates into 77.09 hours of down time year to date or close to 10 hours of down time per month.

Based on this figure, I would not recommend rackshack.net for a commercial enterprise seeking to offer the industry average of 99.5% or higher up time.

Thank you.

I wouldn't go with RackSpace... too expensive and their 'fanatical support' can make some fanatical screwups -- they wiped a couple drives of a friend of mine's... lost over a week of data. They didn't even seem phased that it happened, so he set up a few other servers because they told him this would help... when it made things worse they wouldn't even refund him... ugh.

If you're weary of the cheapo providers, Dialtone.com is pretty good. I was there before moving to Nocster and they always had good response time for me, plus they're not RackSpace expensive.

At least quote the ticket accurately:

"drive had been reformated prior to installation. no evidence of bad blocks "

It was checked for bad blocks before issuance.

are you saying, you did not swap my HD but just format?????

Gosh, I think I have to put your ticket that said my HD had "bad blocks" on here...

Is it the way you treat customers???

said you would swap but did not. Cheat on me by just reformatting???

I think many people on this forum did see rackshack 's "CTO" show up saying rackshack would swap my HD...now they said they did "reformat".......

No.... he was answering your question as to whether or not it was a new drive, it was not, it was reformatted before giving it to you. So your hard drive was swapped with another drive that had been formatted... That clear it up?

Sorry to keep going back to Rackspace, but when you have 5 tier 1 providers with BGP4 routing, you don't have network problems.

Going strong for 2 years with 0 downtime (hardware or network) except when I reboot the server.

I never said anything of the sort :)

Seems some people have good luck with rackshack, some have terrible. This could be true with any provider.
