Do we need redefine again?

All of them are just the same. In a linux shared server each of customer's account are partitioned or just inside a directory. Then under 1 directory customer can create another subdirectory so he can organize his domains. Assigning each domain to a sub-directory.

True, almost all of my server slowdowns that affect all users are attributable to a few users hogging resources and bandwidth or some miscreant spamming the server.

if you have your own normal hosting like you have your own home server or dedicated server then you can have full control on all aspects of hosting. Unlike on a shared hosting you have limited access to the server or has limited features. Most of the shared hosting has restrictions. If the specific server is down all of the customer's websites hosted will be affected.

If the server is partioned then it would be more like VPS. The very fact the the server is not partioned makes it a shared enviornment. VPS is where every partion could be treated as a separate server and can be independently booted.

VPS's are on its own partition per say.

So, do shared hosts basically give each user their own public_html folder?

Is there a specific benefit to partitioning the disk area per account, or is the main advantage still just that VPSs put fewer people on each machine?

Seems to melike the lines between shared and VPS is blurring as servers are able to deliver more resources and more shared hosting companies are offering higher end plans, too.

Shared hosting accounts are all on a single partition. VPS can go either way. VPS shares resources.

VPS is not right for every person. For your business shared hosting may be the best solution. Ultimately it depends on what you want exactly.
